I have my music & movies on a Mac Mini at home and run the Plex server on it (for free) and while driving or traveling I use PlexAmp on my phone to listen to my music (for free) - Plex takes care of the UPNP and so on to make this work. Now, Plex is asking for money for this service: https://www.plex.tv/blog/important-2025-plex-updates/

I think… this seems reasonable? I could run https://jellyfin.org and do it myself I guess, but might be inclined to pay a bit to avoid the extra work…

Important 2025 Plex Updates

Update 4/30/25Since publishing this post we have changed how remote streaming works for personal media libraries, and it is no...

Plex

@timbray I wonder if this is something that maybe TailScale would work for? Making the Plex server look local when it isn't because of VPN cleverness?

(I agree, paying for software is a good thing and these prices seem entirely reasonable)

@timbray Also I think I am going to finally set this up and probably pay Plex money as part of this. Time to finally redo all those DVD ISOs as MKVs.
@timbray I thought it was a fair ask and sufficient reason to stump for the lifetime pass before it goes up. Have you found a solution for gapless playback?
@gonecaving not sure what you mean by gapless. But I turned off the thing where it overlays the end of this song and the beginning of the next.
@timbray @gonecaving I’m referring to the ability to have a continual play from track to track, so that eg tracks that are in several movements don’t have an audible pause but rather lead from one track to the next. I’m not referring to the crossfade ( which is nice for some types of music but not others)
@gonecaving Ah, I usually run on shuffle rather than play albums so the gapless isn't an issue for me.

@timbray Music streaming will still be free.

"Does this affect content from music and photo libraries?
The announced changes for remote streaming of personal content from a Plex Media Server apply only to movie/TV/video media. This does not affect music or photo streaming to our dedicated Plexamp and Plex Photos apps".

@timbray Plex has been one of those services I find so useful that I’ve been paying for a long time, just to feel like I’m supporting the project.

(I’ve been getting a bit nervous of some of their moves lately — I don’t want to rent movies from… Plex, for example, but I get it…)

I do worry that one day I’ll have to switch, but a price increase isn’t going to be the thing that does it, at least for me.

@timbray i did the same for emby by purchasing the lifetime license. Well worth it.

@timbray I paid money for a long time, but it proved to not be enough for Plex to be improved for paying customers. I stopped when I discovered an experience breaking bug…and the thread of people begging for it to be fixed for years.

Pay Emby, or donate to Jellyfin, but I have no confidence that Plex will not continue to cost more and be monetized with FAST and ads at an increasing rate.

@timbray Slightly unrelated question. Do you have to set your MacMini to never sleep with your Plex Sever to get this to work properly? I was running Plex on my ancient NAS, but they now no longer support upgrading my Plex version.
@nathan Yep, the Mini is in never-sleep mode. However, when it restarts (power failure, software update) I do have to sign into the account that owns the Plex server to get it running.
@timbray I got lifetime a few years back and it's been a great value so far.
@timbray Is Plex open source though? If not, it might be worth the hassle to support Jellyfin just for the ethics. 🤔
@timbray Plex the company has no known monetization alternative other than to sell your every movement to the market at the lowest bidder in their "was helpful, now scary" digital panopticon. There's no other business model we know of. Until then, I can't go for that. Jellyfin it is next chance I get. See ya. The law of two feet. The market solves all. 💃✌️💙
@nicksilkey Hmm, the PlexAmp app on my Android doesn't have any location permissions, so it looks like there really isn’t any visible business model, except for the Plex Pass.
@timbray
Jellyfin is good, but nowhere near as good as plex for music etc. Just buy a lifetime pass and be done with it. Mine cost about $70USD 10 years ago, and it's been worth every penny.
@timbray My 2 cts worth of a solution: For music (800+ albums), I‘m using a Raspberry Pi 2 + SSD and an SMB-Share, accessed by #MusicStreamer App on both, i(Pad)OS and macOS. A one-off investment.
@1P1sces Do you need the Raspberry? Could you plug the SSD straight into the Mac? (I have an always-on Mini).
@timbray Why, yes, of course! Same difference: Share the Minis’s SSD and connect via #MusicStreamer. I‘m using the RasPi because its power consumption is a mere 3 to 4 Watts, plus it‘s behind a smart plug allowing me to remotely switch it on. The RasPi will detect any disconnect from the share and shutdown automatically; the smart plug in turn detects power consumption dropping below a threshold and switches off.
@1P1sces Cool. Not for me because I use Android.
@timbray Ah, OK. The Dark Side of the Force 🙃
