I'm curious to hear what others are #SelfHosting! Here's my current setup:

Hardware & OS

Infrastructure & Networking

Security & Monitoring

Authentication & Identity Management

  • Authelia (Docker): Just set this up for two-factor authentication and single sign-on. Seems to be working well so far!
  • LLDAP (Docker): Lightweight LDAP server for managing authentication. Also seems to be working pretty well!
    #AuthenticationTools #IdentityManagement

Productivity & Personal Tools

Notifications & Development Workflow

  • Notifications via: #Ntfy (Docker) and Zoho's ZeptoMail (#Zoho)
  • Development Environment: Mostly using VSCode connected to my server via Remote-SSH extension. #VSCodeRemote

Accessibility Focus ♿️🖥️

Accessibility heavily influences my choices—I use a screen reader full-time (#ScreenReader), so I prioritize services usable without sight (#InclusiveDesign#DigitalAccessibility). Always open to discussing accessibility experiences or recommendations!

I've also experimented with:

  • Ollama (#Ollama): Not enough RAM on my Pi.
  • Habit trackers like Beaver Habit Tracker (#HabitTracking): Accessibility issues made it unusable for me.

I don't really have a media collection, so no Plex or Jellyfin here (#MediaServer)—but I'm always open to suggestions! I've gotten a bit addicted to exploring new self-hosted services! 😄

What's your setup like? Any cool services you'd recommend I try?

@RareBird15 Nice list; Very different from mine in many categories. Immich for personal photos could be a nice addition.

And then there's always "Home Assistant" which is so much more than just smarthome software and can very quickly turn into an entire hobby all by itself.

@varmaxi Hi. I've thought about Immich but photo software always makes me nervous since I'm totally blind lol. I've also thought about HomeAssistant but wasn't sure how useful it would be since my family only has a couple Amazon Echoes, Chromecasts, and a smart air fryer as far as smart devices go.

@RareBird15 Fully understand nervousness about photo software :-).

Regarding Home Assistant, what I love most about it is there's so much it can do with just the app. Some random examples: If it's sunny out and I don't have many steps yet that day I send myself a notification encouraging me to go for a walk. When a family member , using the HA app, is at the store you can send yourself a notification "person x is at store y, let them know if you need anything."; Endless examples like that.

@varmaxi Hmm, might have to give it a try then.
@varmaxi @RareBird15
Second for Home Assistant.
While it's primary purpose is home automation it can be so much more using it's range of add-ons.
For example, my home assistant instance is also home to VaultWarden for secure password storage.
@AlanJP @varmaxi Not sure how I can install HomeAssistant. It looks like to get access to add-ons, you need to install the HomeAssistant OS, and I don't really want to change the OS on my Pi.
@RareBird15 @varmaxi
Maybe get a second Pi, at one point I had 4 😃
@AlanJP @varmaxi Can't really afford that right now, but I probably will when I have the money 😀

@RareBird15
a basic Synology DS716+.
It’s very “consume media/data” oriented, but it’s what I need, and I try stuff here and then.

- portainer: to deploy and update containers easily
- freshrss : 'cause RSS ROCKS !
- whatsupdocker / WUD : to know when an update exists (I don’t really use it)
- wallos : to track my subscriptions
- readeck : bookmark manager and a read later tool, plugged to my browser
- jellyfi]: my mediacenter,
- with jellyseer, not to automatize download, but as a “maybe you should find it”,
- but also streamyfin, for the same reason, and the downloading feature when I’m networkless on my phone / tablet
...

@RareBird15
...
- actualbudget : where the hell is my money going : such a good question actual help me answer
- stashapp : well… you know. Or you’ll know.
- nocoDB : when I need to tweak with datas, or where I put infos on my analog photographies and prints, and collections
- kavita : to read my comics
- changedetection : for professional purposes

@RareBird15 I work for n8n, and read you're blind. We're aware our accessibility needs work and are happy to take your feedback.

More on topic: I've recently added #paperless - a really nice document management system that I now use to manage all my inbound papery stuff.

@BartV I've thought about trying Paperless myself but most documents I have are digital, so I'm not sure I need its features. I'll let you know if I find accessibility issues with N8N.
@BartV Just came back to this after getting some time to play with N8N last night. I tried to set up a workflow that would display my Microsoft To-Do tasks as JSON on a webpage so I could then use my Homepage dashboard (https://gethomepage.dev)'s custom API widget to display them. I wound up giving up in frustration because the workflow editor had too many unlabeled buttons and I couldn't figure out how to do things like execute previous steps. I'd love to have a call or something with someone from N8N where I could give more feedback and maybe demonstrate some of the issues I'm seeing. Would something like that be doable?
@RareBird15 Hi Lanie, I'm sorry to hear that. I'll connect you to our Head of Design in a private message - he'd love to talk to you.

@RareBird15

Wow that pretty sick. I'm begenning in the #selfhosing world and every software you cite have peek my interest. I will check everyone of them. Thx

Just a headless raspberry pi 4 with an external hdd that hosts a nextcloud instance, a website and jellyfin. Cloudflare tunnel because a static ip is too expensive and cloudflare for the domain, apache for the server. I have no background on anything computer related and am thus very proud of my achievement 😛. Also, no backup solution yet since I had no time to set it up but am working on it right now.

I had for the longest time my old HP gaming pavilion 690 that hosted Proxmox and a ton of other services, Home Assistant and managed a lot myself.

Since the first day I am on board with cosmos-cloud.io, and when the standalone version dropped. I put it on baremetal on a HP elitedesk G9 they discarded from work. So free Homelab server with an intel 12th gen CPU which is just… robust. 2nvme’s and a 4Tb drive suits me just fine for Arr stack, Nextcloud, Home Assistant and some other tidbits.

Just recently set up isponsorblocktv in docker. Works beautifully for muting and pressing skip on youtube ads on lan connected smart tvs.

I have an rpi3b+ with inn2 newsserver (connected out via uucp), postfix, ngircd, thelounge, and a few other things

I also have a vps (dooes that count as self-hosted?) with a similar setup (can't get uucp to work yet), but also znc and bitlbee

I also had a pihole/unbound dns server, but that one died a while ago

Inspired by you I've locally hosted Joplin server, partly to migrate off ColorNote. It seems great for moving text/notes between my devices while keeping a core copy in my NAS. Thanks.

A simple, minimalistic ActivityPub instance written in portable C

Codeberg.org

on mine I’m running forgejo, searxng, navidrome, vaultwarden, wireguard, jellyfin, RomM, some VM stuff mainly for compiling, and a bunch of other small stuff like glance.

Then I have a “junk drawer” on it where I just play around with random things in dockers and generally forget about them.
