I think they believe they can shape physical reality by controlling how it is reported.
I'm not joking, I think they literally believe that reality is created by being reported a certain way:

And while you're studying that reality we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. ...obviously this idea is nuts, and they will find out sooner or later. The question is how much damage they do in the meantime, most of which will be suffered by innocent bystanders.
That phrase in "Chernobyl" summed it up best, about lies causing a debt to the truth that has to be repaid.

This is conservatism at its very core; we are going to keep applying the failed solutions of the past despite humanity's understanding of reality moving forward without us, we will do this until we are so undeniably desynced from reality that we need fascism to enforce our worldview on others
That's really all conservatism is, a commitment to solutions that have failed. It's not a balance on a political spectrum, it's an excuse not to change or think that becomes malignant
