1. Don't rat on your friends/compatriots.

2. Don't rat on yourself.

3. If they're still asking, they don't know.

I'd also add good advice from one of the top public defenders in Los Angeles: Do not give any false statement to police that they could corroborate. He gave the specific example of having an immigrant in your home and ICE agents come knocking.

If you say, "I don't know them" or "haven't seen them in weeks" but your phone or other evidence could prove false, that's a misdemeanor that could be made even more serious. Just say, "I can't help you" over and over again if necessary.

The response to threats is to find safety in numbers. The number of cops who will go toe to toe with a crowd is dwarfed by the number who will do the same when their only opponent and witness is you.

@ai6yr It is good enough for a poster but there are exceptions to rule 2. Fortunately the only one likely to come up in a protest is that “plain view” doesn’t allow you to put yourself or others in danger or to impede first responders to get the photo.

Police tend to interpret this very differently than you and I would and the courts rarely second guess their judgement.

@ai6yr also no warrant no search. You can challenge probable cause but not consent. That said don’t carry your own phone.
Straight Talk wireless has a $10 wireless phone that you can cheerfully surrender with no worries. Extra points if you use it to visit foreign language gardening and compost sites. Wastes resources for them to look that shit up. Stash your ‘real’ phone with someone trustworthy.

And I'm just left wondering how you're supposed to have protest in the street without blocking traffic, or on the sidewalk without obstructing building access. If the protest is large enough, both of those things are unavoidable. Seems like a clear catch-22 to me.
