Command & Conquer was REBORN as OpenRA | FOSS Spotlight

@gbryant @gardiner_bryant as you asked for other #OpenSource games: #Warzone2100, #0ad and #7kaa - all fully freely licensed, including assets. I think wz + 7kaa could be particularly interesting for a vid bc. of their history. When we got our first family PC I also got a games collection, which had both the original C&C and 7kaa. So I got super excited when I discovered a few years ago that 7kaa got opensourced. Gameplay-wise wz is my fav. though, love the huge tech-tree.

@gbryant @gardiner_bryant the loyalty system in #7kaa needs some getting used to, otherwise you'll be surprised why your own peasants and knights start to attack you after 20min :D. But it also makes it pretty unique.
Friends of mine are big fans of #0ad. Great soundtrack + graphics, big variety of peoples to try. But is also more resource hungry. #Warzone2100 was probably pretty resource optimized back then already, as it had to run on the PlayStation 1, too. And now allows huge battles.
@gbryant @gardiner_bryant also, I'm still a bit cautious regarding the C&C licenses of #EA's recent "OpenSourceing". Like the "To use the compiled binaries, you must own the game." here: https://github.com/electronicarts/CnC_Red_Alert/tree/main?tab=readme-ov-file#compiling-win32-only
Or the extra clauses in the LICENSE.md. Both might be #GPL incompatible? Also for both this C&C release and #OpenRA assets are not freely licensed.
In contrast, for #Warzone2100, #0ad and #7kaa are fully freely licensed. So I can directly install them on Debian.

@gbryant @gardiner_bryant I would be super interested in watching a video about investigating these license differences in games and explaining what they mean (for the long-term future?). And I guess could be quite educational. But maybe I'd be one of the few ones interested in such a specific topic :D.
@gbryant @gardiner_bryant ah, and speaking of licenses (or in this case it was the trademark, I think) and games: The #Nexuiz / #Xonotic drama. Another example for the term #Enshittification, coined by @pluralistic.
A video about that would probably be quite educational and interesting to watch, too.
(sorry for all this texting, last one from me for today :D. Just discovered your videos today, @gardiner_bryant and I like their style and your personality :-). )
