The Fediverse is still being hit by the "Fediverse Chick" spam, and it seems to be coming from servers that have instant sign-ups open.

If you run a Fediverse server, please consider switching to approval-based sign-ups to prevent spammers flooding the Fedi.

I got a notification that she'd reached out, but when I opened the app it was already gone, so at least the spamming is being dealt with quickly!

But yeah, there's a reason I switched my account to approvals, I can definitely see the same reasoning for an entire server.

@homegrown aw, I'm really disappointed. I was hoping to date a nursing student again 🀣
@homegrown yeah, this seems to be a common problem to this day…

Apparently https://mastodon.luanti.ru is a #Spamming instance. Why else would there be such #Spambots: - https://mastodon.luanti.ru/@nicole17 - https://mastodon.luanti.ru/@nicole30 I suspect this instance doesn't even limut account amounts per IP...

I have my instance set to approve new signups, yet she still shows up in my mentions. She must have auto-follow. I simply #BAHLOCK her whenever she shows up.

Still, good to set new sign ups for you to approve before hand anyway, if only to keep out the bigots.

@AnthonyJK

The idea of approval signups is to prevent the spammer setting up an account on your instance.

It won't stop the spammer being on other instances and pestering you from there, but it will reduce the number of instances the spammer can sign up at.

@homegrown And unfortunately there are also admins out there who don't respond to reports.

@hiker

If they never respond, they'll end up defederated 😞

@homegrown
Yes, entire instances are quickly blocked.
@homegrown On the up side, spammers only go where they know there’s enough eyes to reach, which means Fedi is still growing πŸ₯³
