Every time a tech company says “We’re focused on improving the user experience,” a beloved feature dies, they add chatGPT and their CEO donates $100m to the nearest Nazi

@Daojoan

Tech company improving user experience= we are strengthening our ability to further exploit you.

@yuhasz01 terms of service change = you're fucked

@Daojoan

Agree. I actually read these things and share with my friends and family.

Mainly I point out : do you realize they are claiming WE own everything you do and all data you enter on our platform or app...and all your data everywhere.

Terms of service= terms of data serfdom

@Daojoan @yuhasz01 "We care about your privacy!" = 300+ trackers

@sqx @Daojoan

My record is 430 trackers found on a web site.

@sqx @Daojoan @yuhasz01

We care about your privacy, it's a non-diminishing good, and as such, a valuable asset we can sell over and over again!

You can bet we care a *lot* about your privacy!

@yuhasz01 The tech company is the user, you are the product.

@Daojoan and that's why #CCSS & #SaaS-only shite needs to be eradicaded!

@Daojoan "We are doing THING to better serve you" has a silent "to our clients" at the end.
@Daojoan They see it as a "feature", we know it's an exploitable bug
@Daojoan Agreed for the most part, but unless we're talking about literal Nazis (like the ones imported into every level of government and intelligence by Operation Paperclip), it seems rather reductive to just say Nazis.
@HPlovedaft @Daojoan It's probably just easier for most people to type than 'fascist overlords'.
@mtconleyuk @Daojoan
That's fair, just definitely has some connotations behind it and generally serves to make me tune out when people start foaming at the mouth about "Nazis".
@HPlovedaft @mtconleyuk @Daojoan also character count, nazi IS a four letter word.
@HPlovedaft @Daojoan Um, who do you think it is they're giving to that's not "literal nazis"?

@dalias @Daojoan

So you want a list of everyone big tech companies have donated to that isn't affiliated with the national socialist movement? Right I'll get on that ASAP. 🙄

@HPlovedaft @Daojoan No, I want you to stop JAQing off in folks' replies with vague claims that the folks they've made giant donations to "aren't actually nazis".

Establishing that they're donating to nazis does not require a list of everyone they donated to. What I want to know is who, among the vile parties they've made large donations to that the rest of us agree are nazis, you think is "not a literal nazi".

@dalias @Daojoan Nowhere did I refute their claim, I simply said it's reductive to just say Nazis. The issue is far more nuanced than just "Red V Blue" or "Nazis V Commies".

Anyone slightly right of center who sees a post like this is just going to roll their eyes and keep scrolling instead of actually engaging.

@HPlovedaft @Daojoan It's not nuanced. I'll spell it out clearly. People who keep Mein Kampf by their bedside are nazis. People who make nazi salutes are nazis. People who make & act upon plans to exterminate scapegoat racial or gender groups are nazis. People who willingly collaborate with nazis are nazis. People who vote for nazis are nazis. The entire Republican party is nazis.

If you actually believe these companies have not donated giant amounts of money to any of the above, I have an NFT of a bridge to sell you...

@dalias @Daojoan I feel like you're intentionally misrepresenting my argument, I don't disagree with the fact that there are Nazis being donated to, I'm sure there are.

I disagree with the disingenuous use of the term Nazi here when the vast vast majority of silicon valley is left wing.

It implies that the majority if not all donations are going to far right causes when in fact the vast majority of money flowing in big tech is going to left wing orgs.

@HPlovedaft @Daojoan There was never an implication that "the majority if not all donations are going to nazis". IDGAF if they give $100M to some spineless Dems "to make up for" giving $100M to literal nazis. The latter is utterly damning and there is nothing you can do to atone for giving *anything* to nazis short of wiping out those nazis.

The idea that "vast vast majority of silicon valley is left wing" is utterly bonkers wrong, but a common misconception. Everything about SV is hardcore technofascist. A lot of the workers might *fancy themselves* left wing, but they won't stand in the way of their bosses collaborating with nazis (and they probably agree with the nazis on lots of the bs about "undesirables" and homelessness/"crime").

The few who would have already been ousted for doing so.

@HPlovedaft @dalias @Daojoan
The farce called "national socialism" isn't a left or right thing, it's a "state control" thing and both sides have been pushing towards it from different angles for decades. Democrats mostly set the stage and Republicans mostly knock us down.

And i noticed that you said the statement is correct but you felt inclined to disagree anyway. You take up people's time to discuss how they use their words wrong to say a correct thing. You could try to increase awareness of the correct thing but instead you don't want people to hear it because they won't like it.
I'm just not sure this is the way to a better informed public and a more effective democracy.

@dalias @Daojoan

Also if you believe that all Republicans are Nazis, you're every bit as naive as the people who bought into McCarthyism.

@HPlovedaft @Daojoan 🙄 Spotted the concern-trolling Republican. 👆

@dalias @Daojoan Alright, it's obvious you don't wish to engage in a socratic debate here and only wish to hammer your point home at any cost.

The issue of authoritarianism transcends party lines.

Have fun with your conspiratorial Nazi panic.

@HPlovedaft @Daojoan LMAO we are not here to have "socratic dialog" with people who think nazis have points worthy of debate.

And moreover I'm pretty sure anyone who uses the phrase "socratic dialog" unironically is not somebody I want to have a conversation with at all.

@dalias @Daojoan again you intentionally misrepresent my argument.

I challenge you to find one single statement I've made that would lead a rational person to believe I'm defending Nazis.

@Daojoan I always read that "improving the user experience" as improving ads targeting. When the ads are more intrusive, manipulative, exploitive, deceitful, they become more "relevant" so they improve the user experience. That's what they mean.
@Daojoan don’t forget the layoffs
@Daojoan At first I thought that the idea of a CEO donating money, even to a Nazi, was pretty silly. BUT, if a CEO were to donate to themselves it's much less silly sounding. And in fact, Musk donates money to himself regularly.
@Daojoan
Harsh, but you might be right 😆
@Daojoan Next you're gonna tell me that when a tech company says that they take their users' security very seriously, it means that they've been hacked?

@bontchev @Daojoan

We care about your security, it's a valuable conduit for us to exploit the non-diminishing good that is your privacy; a valuable asset we can sell over and over again!

You can bet we care a *lot* about your security!

@Daojoan And also the app loses its accessibility, usually catastrophically in UI redesigns.

@Daojoan Initially, I had mountains of faith and trust in him.

Until I saw the clip of him parking his 2 million dollar supercar. My heart sank…

@Daojoan
"new and improved" 😱😭
@Daojoan "your privacy is important to us" = oh god no what have they done now

@Daojoan likely.. Damn nostalgia is so comfy Growing up discovering PC systems, programming, learning about open source, being hyped about the future❤️

I'm sorry to the generation following, when I get better I want to enable them to have the same happy times.

@Daojoan that seems to be the thing with proprietary software these days "Feature - ChatGPT". What ever happened with the cool product meetings where people are like "sharks with lasers in their eyes". Fuck, Apple isn't even trying anymore.
@Daojoan @briankrebs
The reason why 2025 will be the year of Desktop Linux is because the other two major commercial operating systems have crippled their UI to such a degree that their machines are unusable.
@Daojoan I giggled despite it being so sad 😆
@Daojoan they limited the scope of the user experince to the CEO

@Daojoan "Microsoft is always striving to improve and streamline our product experiences, offering new ways to use the Outlook for Windows app and the Microsoft Teams desktop app for Windows with the Microsoft Edge web browser.

Web links from Outlook emails or Teams chats now open in Microsoft Edge."

(instead of the user's preferred default browser)

@Daojoan For many CEOs, the nearest Nazi (enabler) is always in the same room with them, how convenient
