As a Member of Parliament of Canada for a major opposition party (he is NDP Critic for Mental Health and Harm Reduction https://www.gordjohns.ca), he participates in international committees and initiatives as well. @[email protected] There has been a lot of discussion over Threads and Meta's long-term plans for fediverse integration — whether it's part of a larger plan to extinguish ActivityPub, etc.

I think there are many things we can do to make that less attractive, the first and foremost bring building up fediverse user counts so that cutting us off would be non-trivial.

The second is getting politicians and journalists onto fediverse first, and not Threads. That might even be the linchpin.

@julian Agreed, I also think it will be revealed as a bit of a false worry because ActivityPub and most of the AP-centric software out there is Open Source. It's not possible to be extinguished if people keep using it. The underlying worry is simply that by having Threads integrate then people will continue using Threads/Corporate Media and in that way extinguish the “hope" of AP becoming a true global standard used by the majority. I think that's the wrong way to look at it.

@chris I'd say he will be connected, but 2000 in one week is asking for a loss.

Mastodon is strong in Europe with a lot of institutions online, but being a politician is not the most looked for job on here. So 1000 a month should be well possible. Others you have to bring with you from another platform.

Once you have that instance set up you will have the chance of a specific audience.

I don't know if 'data protection' in Canada is a unpopular as in Germany, but if it is then show him the account from the german 'Federal Commissioner for Data Protection' - he has 44k Followers. He also hosts the official federal Mastodon server.

But please don't forget that 'the Fediverse' is more than just Mastodon. There also is Peertube for example https://tube.network.europa.eu/videos/overview or Mobilizon, Pixelfed, Friendica, Pleroma, ... they are all connected.
Even an official Potus-Account is there when you include Threads to your Fediverse mindset. I just prefer to block the whole Threads instance.

@xinit unfortunately no real response. The MPs tend to move as a block in their party and the parties have generally continued to use X. They are starting to move to Bsky now though so I think there is an opportunity opening with the trade war to push the canadian-content angle. So I am grateful that this post has re-awakened.
