“What are the roadblocks to full fediverse compatibility in threads?” Peter mentions getting the foundations in place…including fediverse accounts in your feeds, merging fediverse replies into the main threads, media distribution. Hints at these type of foundational items being released in 2025.
I’m really impressed with David’s questions. “Threads was adopted more quickly than was expected - is full fediverse integration still as important as it was initially?”
Answer given: Open social web is important. ? If anyone else is here what did you think of the response?

@mmasnick brings up a great point on this fediverse panel. Social doesn’t have to be big. Use the protocols being built to create cool small websites with a social aspect for you and your friends. It doesn’t have to be everything everywhere all at once. Totally agree!

#FediverseHouse

Hmm agreeing with @mmasnick again. The majority of social media users don’t care about the engine that’s running it. They want to post photos, write posts and share funny things. It’s not necessary to force them to learn every aspect of how a platform works on day one. Evan and Peter from threads agreeing in this point as well.
@box464 @mmasnick unfortunately this framing gives huge advantage to the big centralized networks. Not that I disagree, but it's a fundamental barrier we have to overcome if we want a federated model to work.

@box464 @mmasnick

Meta - I believe - has signed a contract with the NBA to be on Threads. I cannot get the Timberwolves posts in my Mastodon feed. You think that’s a mistake by the Wolves social media person? I think it’s to get people on Threads.

In other words, big matters.

@box464 @mmasnick Social media can be a global chatroom but ActivityPub does not deliver on that.

@box464

I don’t think my college-aged kids would agree with this statement. You need the network effects of all your friends joining and then you need scale to bring in “random” interesting content.

@rob I can’t argue with that..I’m old and just want a way to connect with interesting people without being harassed.

I do think the fediverse has allowed me to be more of my authentic self (openly gay) than I ever felt comfortable elsewhere. Smaller, safer? So be it.

@box464

I’m glad you aren’t being harassed.

But I have seen a few women in the technical space on Mastodon complain bitterly that they were being harassed.

I personally got attacked by what I think was a Russian account and a bunch of real idiots when I suggested early on that the Harris campaign was not succeeding.

Small as it is, there are trolls and evil people here in the Fediverse too.

Fyi - I’m old too.

@box464

Saw this and thought about this thread. Signal is not so different than the Fediverse in that it needs more people to succeed.

Meredith talks about the important social aspects of Signal.
