In Scottish folklore, if a house goblin such as a brownie is treated with disrespect, it can transform into a "bogle." This nasty goblin will devote itself to vandalizing the house and tormenting its inhabitants with the same dedication that the brownie kept things neat and tidy.

@bevanthomas how can I invite a brownie to my house? I promise to treat it like a queen. I would love one to move in and join the family (me and three cats)....especially if it wants to collect cat hair because that would help me a lot. Surely there's a way to invite and welcome one, right?
