What's the most common feedback/comment I've received over the past month? "I used to like reading your stuff when you didn't write about politics all the time."

My response: Me too. But they've left me no choice at this point. If you think tech isn't politics and vice versa, you probably don't believe national security and cybersecurity are two sides of the same coin, either.

thanks @danmcd for pointing me to this excellent TechDirt piece from Mike Masnick that sort of captures my thoughts here:

Why Techdirt Is Now A Democracy Blog (Whether We Like It Or Not)

"While political reporters are still doing their view-from-nowhere “Democrats say this, Republicans say that” dance, tech and legal journalists have been watching an unfortunately recognizable plan unfold — a playbook we’re all too familiar with. We’ve seen how technology can be wielded to consolidate power, how institutional guardrails can be circumvented through technical and legal workarounds, and how smoke and mirrors claims about “innovation” can mask old-fashioned power grabs. It’s a playbook we watched Musk perfect at Twitter, and now we’re seeing it deployed on a national scale.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve had a few people reach out about our coverage these days. Most have been very supportive of what we’ve been covering (in fact, people have been strongly encouraging us to keep it up), but a few asked questions regarding what Techdirt is focused on these days, and how much we were leaning into covering “politics.”

When the very institutions that made American innovation possible are being systematically dismantled, it’s not a “political” story anymore. It’s a story about whether the environment that enabled all the other stories we cover will continue to exist.

We’ve always covered the intersection of technology, innovation, and policy (27+ years and counting). Sometimes that meant writing about patents or copyright, sometimes about content moderation, sometimes about privacy. But what happens when the fundamental systems that make all of those conversations possible start breaking down? When the people dismantling those systems aren’t even pretending to replace them with something better?

But there’s more to it than that..."

@briankrebs @danmcd we are all democracy blogs now comrade.
@briankrebs @danmcd Looks like @cathygellis and @mmasnick are on Mastodon as well. Just threw TD $100 for some good articles.
@briankrebs @danmcd Work conversations have become so difficult. So many aspects of life are under attack from strange quarters. It makes finding appropriate small talk difficult.
@briankrebs @danmcd Too many practitioners in the defensive security industry forget that their jobs actually require them to have agency to protect against mis/disinformation in all areas where information exists. Not just the mis/disinformation limited to the cybersecurity industry.

@briankrebs those who say they don't care about politics are those who benefit from the status quo. It is the height of privilege to "not care”.

Thank you for writing about it, and recognizing that it's all intertwined.

@briankrebs
Try to ignore this madness.
It's not possible. Sides must be chosen.
@jimlil @briankrebs OMFG yes. For the life of me, my ex-Navy brother doesn't get this and it's making both of us miserable.
There is no longer any such thing as Computer Security

Remember “cybersecurity”? Mysterious hooded computer guys doing mysterious hooded computer guy... things! Who knows what kind of naughty digital mischief they might be up to? Unfortunately, we now live in a world where this kind of digital mischief is literally rewriting the world’s history. For proof of that, you

Coding Horror

@briankrebs

You've shared that @mmasnick piece on TechDirt already, right?

@danmcd @mmasnick no which? I've not being minding my socials lately

@briankrebs @mmasnick

This one particularly, because whether we like it or not, it's where we are.

@briankrebs don’t stop. It’s up to the people now. And Thank you for helping us understand these things.
@briankrebs @logicalmoody
“You can’t be neutral on a moving train”
Especially if the train is headed to a very bad place
@briankrebs nowadays you simply cannot avoid politics when talking about tech and security. Even though I would like to.
@briankrebs Anyone still giving that type of feedback is either disingenuous or just doesn’t want to keep being reminded that they’re on the side of the villains, despite all the evidence showing it.
@briankrebs Thanks Brian, for keeping us informed and alert, because this insanity has to stop. Forewarned is forearmed.

@briankrebs This seems to be a common issue on (US) tech blogs nowadays. E.g. https://www.techdirt.com/2025/03/04/why-techdirt-is-now-a-democracy-blog-whether-we-like-it-or-not/

I am really glad you keep writing about the important stuff. And the abolishment of democracy and the rule of law in the USA is very(!) important. Far more so than any analysis of a new ransomeware group somewhere or details of a new wave of malware.

Thank you for your political coverage. Especially because you may reach readers who normally wouldn’t read about this.

@briankrebs 1/2

I used to be as neutral in my career and tech as possible. For years I found it distasteful to discuss politics on LinkedIn, etc and would not do it

When I accepted the role of CIO for a State Elections Board, a requirement was I had to sign an agreement to remain 100% politically neutral to hold the position. It was an easy thing to do as I've never belonged to a party and my personal societal views actually encompass some highly conservative as well as highly liberal beliefs

@briankrebs 2/2

For me this isn't actually a political argument. This frankly is an honesty, integrity, and Democracy argument. We are being poisoned by a growing culture that finds the ends justify the means, no matter how evil those means may be.

And I find that it is something I cannot stay quiet about.

If people don't like what you are saying Brian, perhaps they should look to themselves. These are not normal times.

@briankrebs Keeping up with politics is like eating your veggies. Short-term, not as satisfying as stuffing your mouth with cake or steak, but is essential for your survival in the long-term.
@briankrebs keep up the good work Brian, we need people like you!
@briankrebs Please don't stop. You have avid readers who want to learn from your views and experience.

@briankrebs I've liked reading your stuff for many years (yours and Bruce Schneier's would be the last security blogs I'd give up if I had to). I like it even even more now. Thanks. Persist. Because

That which is unsustainable tends in the end to be unsustained.

@briankrebs

I'm fully on board. Just stay out of sports!

😉

@briankrebs I love reading your stuff more than ever because you draw the connections between national security and cybersecurity.
@briankrebs Yeah, I'm sure it would be great if you weren't writing about politics every day. Because it would mean people in politicians weren't talking wreaking balls to infosec at every level...

@briankrebs Those people are fools.

I've followed your reporting for maybe a decade now, and it has always been important and valuable and very well written. It continues to be all of those things as you necessarily shift to cover the catastrophic happenings in the US these days.

Thank you.

@briankrebs this won’t be forever, Brian. But maybe it will. Either way, we continue to do the work.

@briankrebs
@Em0nM4stodon

See, these folks that disdain discussion of politics so vehemently...

ARE THE BIGGEST REASON WE'RE WHERE WE ARE TODAY!!

Their complacence/indifference/ignorance has allowed the current political fiasco to occur.

So, my considered response is, FUCK 'EM!!

🤦‍♀️🤷🫏🤡🖕

@briankrebs life is political and anyone who thinks it isn't has a mental model of the world that is improbably small

@briankrebs Speaking as an platform security specialist: anyone who doesn't understand that what's going on in Washington right now is a security breach has no business calling themselves “cybersecurity” anything.

Keep right on doing what you're doing, you are making my life a lot more livable!

@briankrebs look, I didn’t know you super well, but these posts have proven you are a really decent human.
@hacks4pancakes @briankrebs it’s reassuring to see that your entire country hasn’t gone crazy. If someone isn’t interested they don’t have to read it.
@briankrebs there are so many things I'd rather be doing, yet the BS is happening and there is nothing left but to comment about the ludicrousness of the situation

@briankrebs You sound a lot like one of my heroes the late Christopher Hitchens.

When asked why he was always talking about politics and religion, he replied that the Parties of God had left him no choice, if he wanted to live in a modern civilized world.

@briankrebs speak up while we still can.
@briankrebs I’m loving the stuff you are putting out and wish I saw more of it from main stream media.
@briankrebs i’m following specifically for these takes. please keep at it, your perspective is refreshing
@briankrebs Please keep up your great writing. 💯
@briankrebs FWIW, actully love the action you're taking in pusuing cybersecuritty matters no matter where they lead.
@briankrebs ignore them. You are good person and I am reading your blog for long time. I know you are an intelligent reporter covering cybersecurity. Keep it up the good work mate.
@briankrebs it's s bit like with people saying they aren't interested in politics.
No you definitely are! Most people complain about things that have to do with politics.
As long as you are living in a society(nearly everyone) your life is impacted by politics.
Not caring about politics is a luxury you can only have if your system is working, which it isn't really anywhere yet.
Autocrats are using those anti politics sentiments.
Politics decide about our reality we are living in together.
@briankrebs tbh, I prefer reading about politics from an accomplished journalist rather than an opinionated hobbiest, so keep going please.

@briankrebs I'd love the fucking confidence and privilege to demand someone else not focus on politics, let alone myself.

I live in poverty.

Either I get engaged in politics, or I become a criminal.

It's as simple as that

@briankrebs everything is politics... it's just that the ghouls have made politics as nasty as it is now exactly to turn most of Us off of politics.

@briankrebs The steam engine was political too.

The printing press was political too.

The way we run the world is always political.
