The National Republican Congressional Committee published an atrocious social media post calling Hispanic Caucus Chair Adriano #Espaillat an “illegal immigrant,” after the NY Democrat gave a Spanish-language rebuttal to #Trump’s address to #Congress.

#Espaillat accused #Trump of fostering an “environment of fear among the immigrant community” during his Tues night speech, & told a story about a US citizen who had been wrongfully detained by #ICE as part of Trump’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants.

The #NRCC, which once posted a wildly #xenophobic ad showing AI-generated images of immigrants flooding US national parks, issued a new installment in its catalogue of extremely #racist posts, this time targeting Espaillat.

#Espaillat has been a US citizen for >40 years & is the first formerly undocumented immigrant to serve in #Congress. When his family first immigrated to the US from the #DominicanRepublic roughly 60 years ago, they briefly overstayed their tourist visa but obtained green cards within the year, acc/to HuffPost. [that’s the extent of his former 50 years ago “undocumented” status]

@Nonilex IIRC he's not the first undocumented — that'd be super white Dutch-origin Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-MI). Hoekstra was born in the Netherlands and came over with his parents when he was three. They forgot to do paperwork for his citizenship. One again, my memory is fuzzy but I think he didn't learn this himself until he was being cleared for access to intelligence material.

Funny how that works, not a peep about Hoekstra. It's buried online, nothing in his Wikipedia entry.

@Nonilex Unless they’re prepared to call Elon Musk an illegal immigrant, who also became a U.S. citizen after remaining in the country on an overstayed visa, the NRCC needs to STFU.
