Sometimes, throughout history, speaking up could be the most dangerous thing an ordinary human could do—and yet it is perhaps the most important thing, too.

When too few people speak up for too long, dangerous ideas can take hold: McCarthyism, Nazism, Stalinism, Maoism, and more.

All authoritarians have the same impulse: shut down speech they don’t like. But it doesn’t happen overnight.

It’s a matter of enough people going with it long enough, little by little.
