This is from the executive director of the 18F, the digital services agency within the General Services Administration (GSA) that develops open-source tools to improve digital services across the federal government.

"I am the Executive Director of 18F and 18F’s longest running employee- I have been at 18F for 10 years. You may not have heard of us, but last night proved that we are powerful. The way the administration ran to get rid of us under the cover of night and shut us down without warning proves that they were scared. They are too afraid to even speak to us.

We, like our many allies, had the “radical” idea that the government should be responsive to the needs of real people. We assembled amazing teams of technology professionals from different specialities who could work together and learn from each other. We shared what we learned with everybody.

I saw, time and time again, where we stood up for partners who were getting taken advantage of by vendors, or just needed help turning a vision into reality. We could make a simple website or a complicated system, we would do what we needed to best serve the mission and the public. We didn’t upsell anyone, we tried to teach our partners how to do what we did. I see them still prospering years after working with us.

We have proven methods that could be replicated, so we helped even more people through guides and writing. Those people are still going. And I am cheering them on.

We were living proof that the talking points of this administration were false. Government services can be efficient. You can work with agencies as they are now and work with them to better manage their services.

This made us a target. People who own skyscrapers are afraid of 100 people who made websites better. Not because of the latest tech fad, but because we proved that the government can be fixed, the government can be made better and the government can work for the people."

GSA shutters 18F, possibly leaving agencies in the lurch

On early Saturday morning, the General Services Administration eliminated the program.

FedScoop
It's not an accident that DOGE has taken over the U.S. Digital Service. The president wants to grab all the federal agencies by their data. Now they're doing it with the GSA's 18F.
The POTUS is systematically disabling any checks and balances on executive power, and that especially includes agencies that publish raw data. Like the National Weather Service, which this administration wants to privatize (probably using Musk satellites)
@briankrebs Assuming we get back to a normal president in 4 years, how the hell do we recover from the actions so far? A lot of these agencies already required significant political willpower to establish. Even if they are easy to reestablish in name, the teams will take years to be hired and rebuilt.

@briankrebs I don't know why Democrats and others in Congress aren't treating this like the destruction that it is. In war or natural disasters, it takes hours to destroy something and years to rebuild, if there is willpower to rebuild.

Our representatives in government must be proactive to prevent more damage. Being reactive isn't enough.

@briankrebs @AlesandroOrtiz

i am not seeing us going back

that is the end game

@catsrule0000 @briankrebs @AlesandroOrtiz That was Hitler’s theory. He figured he’d established a thousand year Reich, 12 years later, he put a bullet in his own brainpan. We should all be working on hastening that for Trump.

@AlesandroOrtiz @briankrebs unfortunately in the same way you don't stand in the way of a hurricane, you just warn people, try to get as many as possible out of the way of its path and into a safe area, then you ride it out. Only after it has passed can you begin to assess the damage and start rebuilding...
@AlesandroOrtiz @briankrebs Realistically, it could be 20 years or more to fix this mess. Assuming there even is an election in 4 years (because after all he did say “you won’t have to vote again”).
@AlesandroOrtiz @briankrebs The USA has to take quick action to stop this mess. They can't wait for a new election or 4 years. How will you even be sure to get a fair election if every system gets played with?
@briankrebs Maybe they’ll actually do something about the Second Amendment, eventually.

@Novyx @briankrebs

Oh, #AgentKrasnov is doing something about the 2nd amendment.

Edit: I fact checked it and Stone denies it. However, since Stone is a convicted Felon, jailed for lying about russian interference against Hillary. I am leaving it up as Stone is untrustworthy and this is on brand with the current Maga moves.

@briankrebs everything is transactional now💵💰
@briankrebs @codeneko The farmers seem to be pretty unhappy about that and the climate data.
@briankrebs
That's the plan. Destroy any authority that tells him no. Just like putin did. He is installing a putin style government that he can manipulate however he wants. Facts and the law will be a memory of the past if he is not stopped and booted out of the government.
He's a traitor. He should have been in jail before this.

@briankrebs when do we start looking at default blocking outbound ASN 721,637,749,3471 etc. ?

MISP instances just got weird in a hurry.

@briankrebs anyone who still has some notion Elon wants to do any good for America should consider 18F was the epitome of using startup methodology and tech for efficiency and cost savings. And he blew it away.

@hacks4pancakes @briankrebs more money to be made selling services to the government than having the government do it themselves.

Is anybody naive enough to think any of this is about efficiency?

@wishy @briankrebs have you been on X lately? 😩
@hacks4pancakes @briankrebs
18F is his competition. An agency that actually uses a startup mindset correctly in the context of optimising government systems? Someone might compare their work with Musk's infallible DOGE approach, and find the latter lacking, so 18F must be destroyed...

@hacks4pancakes @briankrebs

I wonder how many voted for Trump. Suckers and losers they are.

@hacks4pancakes @briankrebs His ears are still burning from that "go on buddy, tell us what's so crazy about this stack, compared to that of every other global platform out there" conversation at Twitter (RIP).
@briankrebs I just discovered Elon Musk(DOGE) was following me on Bluesky. Why are they following ANYONE let alone a Canadian?Scares me.

@briankrebs

Significant potential impact: Did 18F own operations for login.gov, or did they just build and maintain most of it?

@ducksauz you can consider login.gov effectively dead for the time being.

@briankrebs

Yeah, that's what I was worried about. My prediction is that a big fat contract will get handed to Clear to be the new IdP for government websites. They've already got their hooks in with TSA.

@briankrebs @ducksauz 😂 Much of it is just being replaced by ID.ME not unlike what 18F brought to the table. Everyone else sees it as we are getting an upgrade from increasingly inadequate systems.

@briankrebs that letter was from Brian Whittaker?
@briankrebs The Nazis in power don't need your agency anymore. They make the dictates.

@briankrebs I don't know if you follow Ethan Marcotte (@beep ). Here is his post from two weeks ago on leaving 18F.

I had a wonderful job, until I didn’t. This is about what happened—and what is still happening.

@briankrebs Great. With one fell swoop, the Resistance will have its own tech agency with deep experience in USA's federal government's computer systems now.
@briankrebs all part of the 🍊💩 Elaine moist plan to disassemble the entire infrastructure of the US for their mate in moscow

@briankrebs I'll make generalist statement about this as I am not US citizen neither a resident.

Tax money is public money. Funding open-source from tax money is a sustainable and transparent investment in the future. when such software has a positive impact beyond the borders of a country, it also shows an investment in the greater good.

When such funding is withdrawn to be replaced by private contracts, it shows that those in power do not place the people first, neither serve them.

@briankrebs If that's the way they wanna spin it, I guess go for it. But by the time the doge boys are done cutting there's probably only going to be a few humdred thousand federal employees...And every single one of tnem will be loyalists. I'd imagine they'll be more like ministers in imperial china or japan or gilded era europe.
@briankrebs The Pacific north west tech billionaires would OF COURSE shut down any govt agency promoting Open Source.
@briankrebs Is anyone in the US defence forces watching what the Republican Party is doing?
@briankrebs has anyone already git clone all repos in https://github.com/orgs/18F/repositories ?

@briankrebs So much easier for Russia to hack us now. Shocking.
@briankrebs https://18f.org is relevant here.
18F: We are dedicated to the American public and we're not done yet

For over 11 years, 18F has been proudly serving the American people to make government technology work better. We are non-partisan civil servants. 18F has worked on hundreds of projects, all designed to make government technology not just efficient but effective, and to save money for American taxpayers.

@briankrebs

Probably someone will want to change name of our nation: "Tesla America".

It seems Tesla people and engineers are now completely running the nation and Federal government.

What is so weird: 1--most people do not seem to care, certainly not in Congress; 2--domestic terrorists---bigoted , greedy a**holes--- took over our nation with no resistance to their coup.

@briankrebs

Did anyone get a chance to archive the site? I’d be happy to help re-host.

@briankrebs Angry about the mass #DOGE firings from #USDS, #CFPB, #NIH, #18F, and everywhere else across the federal government?
