This weekend marks the start of the holy month of Ramadan. I'm sure many of you know that fasting during this month involves refraining from eating and drinking from dawn until sunset.

You probably know as well that Ramadan is about spirituality, worship and giving generously. The rituals of fasting and prayer ground us and teach us self-discipline as we deny our bodies food to strengthen our spirits.
As someone who has stood on the frontline of advocating for social justice for as long as I can remember, Ramadan is a constant reminder of those who are forgotten in a world that compels us to look the other way lest we lose the little we have.
I'm reminded that injustice is only possible when we, as individuals and communities, choose to bury our heads in the sand and pretend the horrors of genocide, ecocide, culturicide, scholasticide and countless other crimes aren't happening right before us.
But when I wake up before dawn for water and some dates before my fast begins, I choose to stand even firmer for justice. I choose discomfort, for those who commit injustices are not deserving of comfort. I owe it to those crying out for justice to use my privileges and back my prayers with action.
The beauty of my religion, and indeed all religions, lies in their call for justice and compassion. As you remember the oppressed, I urge you to ask yourself: What am I doing for them?
For what it's worth, this Ramadan, step out of your comfort zone. Give back generously to your community. Don't let the month lose its true meaning by reducing it the absence of food and water.
