My staff just shared with me that the Supreme Court of Canada is closing down its X account. #X #Canada #cdnpoli #SupremeCourtofCanada #SCC

@Paulatics

This is great news! I wish all government accounts would do the same.

@Paulatics "LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube" 😐
@Paulatics Yay! Jeez, had no idea they were still there. Held onto that fetid bone for a long time.
@Paulatics I vote for a GoC Mastadon server :-) Good to see there is some recognition of the toxic nature of Twitter
European Commission on Mastodon

Mastodon instance managed by the European Commission.

Mastodon hosted on ec.social-network.europa.eu
@Paulatics the govt should not be dependent on US companies to reach Canadians. Those communications are manipulated and it's going to get worse.
@Paulatics Imagine still using FaXistan as a normal communication channel until end of February 2025.
@frumble I have been asking the Government of Canada to leave X for months, now. But I suspect the election in the offing has meant a halt to such decisions, at least until the dust settles.

@Paulatics

That's great news! Now, if only the entire government would stop using foreign owned walled gardens to communicate with Canadians.

If only there was some sort of open, easily federated platform that could be run within the gc.ca domain, thereby verifying every person and post on the platform. 🤔

@TheDefiant604 Oh I ageee completely. But.

@Paulatics

It's a great start, though. The less entities and people supporting that fascist site, the less good people will feel they have to remain there.

@TheDefiant604
#PostOfTheWeek (season 2):
The Canadian Supreme Court has announced that it will no longer be posting on X.

In a short post announcing its departure on Wednesday, the court said it would be “focusing our communication efforts” on other platforms.

Other state bodies and private businesses have also left X in recent months due to concerns about the platform’s policies and misinformation

@Paulatics Yay!!! It’s about time!!
@Paulatics YES!!
Things are finally moving!
@chris @Paulatics Sort of. Ditching X while telling followers to use Meta instead is not exactly progressive.
@Paulatics The Government of Canada should make a Mastodon instance.

@Paulatics

I always loved the Supremes and this will make Trumpusk batshit crazy

@Paulatics good news/bad news. No public sector bodies should use corporate services for primary communication. I’m not saying info shouldn’t be shared on the networks you listed but they should be in addition to public spaces operated by local, provincial, territorial or federal governments. I will not create an account with a corporation that mines my data in order to receive information that should be free.
@Paulatics
They should come to Mastodon
@Linux
@Paulatics Sad news: they're not even moving to Bluesky, they're just staying on the other billionaire platforms

@Paulatics

LinkedIn,Facebook, Instagram and YouTube! Mastodon users react:

@Paulatics

The Supreme Court of Canada should get a Bluesky account. At least it's not run by fascists.

@KathyLK @Paulatics Agree completely that SCC should be on BlueSky, as I perceived it to be the least bad mainstream alternative.

But I'm rather less sure about the "not run by Fascists" part, at least in the mid to long term if (maybe) not right now.

@KathyLK @Paulatics

Wait, even Mastodon accounts are recommending Bluesky over Mastodon?

I give up.

@RoyBrander @Paulatics

If Bluesky ever gets "bought" by a fascist, I'll leave. In the meantime, it's a good place to communicate to Democrats in our government who refuse to set up Mastodon accounts. Believe me, I've told people I know to join Mastodon, but they think it's too complicated.

As it was, it took me a while to figure out how to remove all the "boosts" from my feed so I could get only original posts.

@KathyLK @Paulatics

The Twitter experience suggests that, by that time it is inevitably* bought by a fascist, it will be very, very difficult to leave.

*so far, I'm not aware of anybody with a business model for a social media service that makes more money than turning it fascist. (Similar to why there's little left-wing talk radio, no solution there in 30 years so far.)

That makes the takeover quite inevitable, even if I can't supply the date. But recall Dorsey DIDN'T shut down Trump 5X.

@RoyBrander @Paulatics

I didn't find it hard to leave Twitter at all. I will leave Bluesky in a minute if the CEO and Board turn it into a fascist platform. In the meantime, it serves a purpose, and as long as it's useful to me, I'll stay on it.

I find the antagonism to Bluesky by Mastodon users to be a bit puzzling. It's not like Bluesky is "taking away" anything from Mastodon. It's not like Bluesky users are being brainwashed into becoming fascists. Really, give those of us who are on both Bluesky and Mastodon some credit for at least having a little intelligence.

I know the risks, but as I said, right now Bluesky is useful. I can communicate directly with some people--primarily Democrats and civil rights organizations in the U.S.-- who are not on Mastodon now. Some of them even respond, so I know they're aware of what I think. Trying to predict Bluesky's future and allowing a hypothetical future to affect my current status on Bluesky isn't worth arguing about, IMHO.

@KathyLK @Paulatics

The difference between the rich and the poor, one could argue, is long-term planning. The poor feel forced to seize short-term opportunities.

Best of luck!

@RoyBrander @Paulatics

Wow, condescending much? Or are you simply a conspiracy theorist?

@KathyLK

> a Bluesky account.  At least it's not run by fascists.

For now...

@Paulatics

@Paulatics

A very wise decision…

@Paulatics If you see an official statement from the Supreme Court on its website or elsewhere, can you please share it?

@Paulatics

It's a start. But Facebook and Instagram are no better.

@Paulatics

That’s a great start!

Referring everyone just to go over to Meta though … *sigh*

@Paulatics they seriously need to get on a platform NOT owned by US billionaires

@Paulatics

Great they are abandoning Twitter, but the others mentioned are not much better.

To me, it would be better to move to BlueSky and/or Mastodon, leaving Facebook and Instagram.

@Paulatics They ought to boycott all USA based platforms.
@Paulatics
Next close out your Target credit card accounts, please. You guys don't need to but it would be a nice gesture. Thanks!
@Paulatics they should come here! Mastodon is perfect for government and public bodies. They can control their own presence entirely. No dependence on foreign services.
@ret I agree. I have seen that some people from Mastodon have written to the Supreme Court to make that point. It couldn’t hurt.
@Paulatics LinkedIn is such a weird choice. Does anyone follows politics on there?
@Paulatics Thanks for sharing that. Every small victory is still a victory. And they all add up. 😀

@Paulatics
Have they noticed that those are all USA-based companies, and been invited to consider the merits of their own Mastodon server?

In addition, to be sure.

@Paulatics I bet they'll be more than welcome to join mstdn.ca
@Paulatics Dumping X/Twitter is understandable given how toxic it has become, not to mention Trump's behavior towards the best neighbor the U.S. could ever hope to have.
