🐱SUPER CATS, NINJA, & THE EMPEROR'S BIRTHDAY🥷

February 22nd is 'Cat Day' (ねこの日/ニャンの日 'Neko-no-hi' or 'Nyan-no-hi')!😺🥳

'Meow' in Japanese is 'nya-' (にゃー)...
...as February 22nd (22.2 'ni ni ni') sounds a little like "nya nya nya", the day is devoted to our feline friends.

The date of National Cat Day is different for each country. In Japan the 'Executive Cat Day Committee' selected February 22nd in 1978🐈‍⬛🐈🐾

🥷NINJA DAY🥷

So it turns out that February 22nd is not only 'Cat Day', but is also celebrated as 'Ninja Day' (忍者の日)🤯

Again it is thanks to word play.
22.2 = 'ni ni ni', a shortening of 'nin(ja) nin nin' (忍者 にん にん), the sound ninja make when striking a pose.

International Ninja Day falls on December 5th, but the old ninja strongholds of Iga (in Mie Prefecture) and Kōka (in Shiga Prefecture), and the 'Japan Ninja Council' (日本忍者協議会) have promoted February 2nd-22nd as a celebration of everything ninja since 2015.

Shuriken (手裏剣 lit. 'hidden hand blade') came in many different shapes.

Samurai commonly carried 'bō shuriken' (棒手裏剣 'stick shuriken'), rather than the more familiar star-shaped ones, as these could kill in the right hands. 'Ninja stars' were intended more as a distraction.

🎂TENNŌ TANJŌBI🥳

February's 2nd national holiday (February 23rd) celebrates the birthday of Emperor Naruhito (徳仁 b.1960).
Tennō tanjōbi (天皇誕生日), "The Emperor's Birthday", has been a holiday since 1868, changing with the accession of each new emperor.

Renamed after WWII, the celebration was originally known as 'Chiaki-bushi' (千秋節) and then 'Tencho-setsu' (天長節). Together with the empress consort's birthday, 'Chikyū-setsu' (地久節), the names referenced an old Chinese idiom from Lao Tzu's (老子) "Tao Te Ching" (道德经).
