seen quite a few people lately spinning up lil single-user instances for themselves and talking about how it feels really freeing to be in charge of their own fedi presence; that's really nice to read :)

if you're spinning up a new GoToSocial instance for yourself, don't forget you can use the domain permission subscription thingy to subscribe your instance to blocklists of well-known arsehole instances, so you can create domain block (drafts) automatically and nip a lot of potential harassment vectors in the bud

some basic lists that are worth considering:

tip: rather than creating a subscription that creates blocks immediately, it's a good idea to set it to create drafts, and then manually review and approve/reject each draft, otherwise you might end up blocking folks you actually would prefer to federate with

Also you can now experiment with @vyr's Slurp tool to import a mastodon archive into your GtS instance, so you can carry your posts with you: https://github.com/VyrCossont/slurp?tab=readme-ov-file#importing-a-mastodon-archive. Handy if you're migrating off a big instance onto a self-hosted one (yay, decentralization!) and you wanna keep your bangers. At some point we'll build this functionality into GtS itself so you can just upload an archive via the settings panel, but for now you've gotta do some Computer Touching to make it work.

@dumpsterqueer @vyr Can the import be done even if the target GtS account has been up for some time with newer posts already? I'm thinking of "backporting" posts to this account
@jarno @vyr sure can!
@dumpsterqueer @vyr Great! v0.18.0 really has some killer features, big thanks to you and associated computer touchers involved!

@dumpsterqueer @vyr this is awesome! Not needed anymore in my case, but some friends have not selfhosted yet for this reason, they will love it! Already advertised them!

Thank's, as always, for doing this super software!

@dumpsterqueer @vyr so this is super cool, but I'm sorry that I have to say

getting my toots slurped would fix me

@dumpsterqueer Note that the subfolder has the lists in Mastodon format, with Mastodon's weird hashtag headers. The one you linked is in "Fediblockhole" format.

@oli ah thanks, I'll edit!
@dumpsterqueer @oli Thanks so much for these, I've subscribed to all of them ☺️
@dumpsterqueer thanks for reminding me! I just updated my instance last night and wanted to try this out as well as try importing my old Mastodon account posts.
@dumpsterqueer is there an easy "host on your own pc" guide for people with a spare Pi or old PC? I seem to only find guides for hosting services
@dumpsterqueer With this in mind is there anyway we could tap into the 'Relay' side of things? Found it really useful when running Akkoma
@nick yes when time permits! We intended to do it last year even, but you know how these things go :P

@dumpsterqueer I wrote about my experience first standing up my single-user masto instance here https://shellsharks.com/own-my-social. But all of those same things apply (and more!) to this GtS instance (I also wrote about that here: https://shellsharks.com/notes/2025/01/10/gotosocial-on-knt-host)

It really is freeing to have this space. So thanks to you, and everyone else involved in making it happen!

@dumpsterqueer do any companies provide reasonably priced GotoSocial hosting?
@dumpsterqueer thought you might know one you could recommend off the top of your head. There do appear to be some but I’ve not heard of the companies.
