Eh...

It's a rolling release, so it's got that going for it, but a lot/most of their custom utilities (such as the package manager) is still on Python 2, which is... not good.

/usr/bin/python is even a symlink to python2 which is really not good.

Small team. Looks like the original dev, who started a new distro, is going to re-work a lot of those things, which will be the basis for Solus going forward, so there's a lot of hope for newer and better utilities.

To be clear, my only real complaint so far is the python2-ness of it.

Also, they don't have a ksh package (which some of my scripts require), but I managed to compile the standard ksh2020.

I don't know if I will stay. #Python2 is kind of a deal-breaker.

Still slowly replicating my #KDE #Plasma setup from my work #Debian box. I have a lot of custom keybinds that make it a little more like i3/sway for me.

My other options are Debian testing, #FreeBSD (probably will lose the ability to run KSP), or #OpenSuSE tumbleweed (if they can ever just enable polkit by default, already).

@rl_dane

Ah right, I remember you mentioning Python 2.

@rl_dane @amin That's... not a good idea. I've come to the conclusion that using a niche distro is not worth it.

@thedoctor @amin

You might be on to something, there.

What are you daily-driving?

I just really want something faster than an every-other-year release cycle. Once a year would be decent.

I like a six-month cycle, but I have serious trust issues with both Ubuntu/Canonical and Fedora.

I wish there was a solid debian-based option that released more frequently.

The sad xz issue last year scared me off of running Debian Testing. ;)

Here's a very geek thing. Going to reply 5 times with my computers information in Fastfetch / Neofetch: 5 Operating Systems > #Solus #KDE #Plasma6 > #Solus #Budgie > #SerpentOS > #PCLinuxOS #KDE #Plasma5 > #HaikuOS 4 Machines > #System76 #Thelio Desktop > #Razer Blade 15 Lap...

@rl_dane @amin I've been running Fedora for years and it's been great for me. But I'm not recommending you anything :P

@thedoctor @rl_dane

"You do not deserve my recommendations."

@amin @rl_dane Yes, that's exactly what I meant, you're all beneath me. /s

I think recommending distros in this context is pointless, I don't have information you don't have. I definitely don't have trust issues with Fedora but if you do, so be it.

@thedoctor @amin

The latest thing with them producing lower-quality flatpaks and pushing their own flatpak remote/repo, and then the team lead of Fedora doing a very disinformational "interview" just smells off to me. :/

Otherwise I'd love to try it out.

My other options are Debian testing, #FreeBSD (probably will lose the ability to run KSP), or #OpenSuSE tumbleweed (if they can ever just enable polkit by default, already).

Sorry, why not Debian stable? I've been rocking it for a year and a half now.

@amin

Because KDE Plasma 5.27 is getting really long in the tooth.

I'd just use Sway on my desktop, but I have a hell of a time trying to get Gnome-based apps running at all, so that means I can't use my VPN.

@rl_dane @amin Solus is neat, but I found their repos to be very lacking. That could be supplemented with Flatpaks/Snaps.

But it the main dev working on Serpent OS, I don’t think Solus will be lasting much longer.

@jlw_the_jobber @amin

From what I've seen, they're intending SerpentOS (I keep forgetting the new name) to give fresh blood to Solus, and become something like the testing or advanced version of Solus.
