WYOMING: “Thank you, Madam chairman.” “I prefer ‘Mister’ chairman.” “Well you all voted preferred pronouns cannot be compelled speech.”

@thetnholler.bsky.social Balls! Shoved their legislation right into their faces.

Thank you, Brit.

@thetnholler.bsky.social This woman is my new hero. She was nervous, so stumbled over her words just a bit, but made her point flawlessly.
Woman Calls Male Legislator 'Madame' During 'What Is A Woman Act' Debate

Debate grew tense Thursday when a woman insisted on calling a male legislator "Madame" at the beginning of her testimony against the "What is a Woman…

@thetnholler.bsky.social When we get through this, people will no longer know what a pronoun is, will they?

@Virginicus @thetnholler.bsky.social I'm not sure people still know what words are. *heaves a huge sigh*

I have to turn off my editor/proofreader persona, smother memories of sentence and clause analysis lessons, and keep in mind the need to focus on what someone means... if I can untangle it. Luckily this one got its point over.

My opinion: pronouns don't need gender. English could have a totally new neuter pronoun, leaving 'it' for inanimate objects.

@sunflowerinrain @Virginicus @thetnholler.bsky.social

"They" is the singular neutral pronoun that's been in use since before Shakespeare's time.

@deirdrebeth @Virginicus @thetnholler.bsky.social I use "they", perforce, though I would prefer a distinction between singular and plural.

@sunflowerinrain @Virginicus @thetnholler.bsky.social

Sadly the plural "thee" has fallen too far out of style.

@deirdrebeth @Virginicus @thetnholler.bsky.social I've tried to bring thou and thee back. Matching the verb stumps people. Not enough Shakespeare in the diet.
@deirdrebeth @sunflowerinrain @thetnholler.bsky.social While we’re at it, let’s bring back “wit” for “we two”and “yit” for “you two”.
@sunflowerinrain @deirdrebeth @Virginicus @thetnholler.bsky.social None is necessary. Despite Victorian prescription, 'they' has ALWAYS been neuter in both gender and number. If you MEAN it singular, then use singular grammar; if you mean plural, then plural. But the word itself is the same either way. You don't need the thing you want; you just need to get used to something that's already been a thing for centuries, just much less used for the last one or so.
@Virginicus @thetnholler.bsky.social They already don't. For years no, I've heard "no pronouns" or the like from plenty of people. They obvious have no fucking idea what a pronoun is.
@thetnholler.bsky.social The rest of Britt’s comments were good too.
@thetnholler.bsky.social , this is a great idea, call all those macho males with big ego, madam from now on. Madam president Tump! It sounds great
@Man the best would be "miss". They don't have a husband, after all...
@womble miss is fine as well 😂

That's the way to really get under their skin.

Hit 'em in the knee.
And if that doesn't work, hit 'em with an example of how stupid their laws are.
@thetnholler.bsky.social Lol, I've been waiting for someone to think of this!
@thetnholler.bsky.social I love this and I'm happy to do my part to make sure these haters get bit by their own dog.
