Today I encountered my first AI-generated news article that included a manufactured quote from me on a topic I did not speak or post about, just in case you're wondering how AI is going.

@evacide

Are you saying it read your mind? Wowsa! 😱

@evacide you’re lucky, according to chat gpt I’m dead.
@Amiek @evacide You guys are losers. According to ChatGPT I'm on the faculty of a local law school, which should make my mom really proud.
@msbellows @Amiek @evacide it said I am Twitch streamer

@msbellows @Amiek @evacide Oh God. I'd never thought to ChatGPT myself.

That was.... Creepy. I mean, it's terribly flattering. I'd love to be the guy it just described... 😛

@mark @Amiek @evacide So are you a sex pest? A masher? A hoarder of overdue library books? Perhaps the dauphine of Mauritius?

@msbellows @Amiek @evacide Apparently, I've written engaging and user-oriented software.

Hah, really?! I'm pretty sure I just faff about in JavaScript. 😉

@Amiek @evacide ::casts turn undead::

@Amiek @evacide

I'm just hoping they don't put AI in charge of anything. According to my student loans, I'm worth more dead than alive. If AI gets that, I'm gonna be Skynet's first target.

@evacide did it sound like you?
@copiesofcopies It was bland and inoffensive and it used a cliche, so no.
@evacide intolerable. I’m vicariously incensed.
@evacide @copiesofcopies I wonder if this is not grounds for libel? [Falsely attributing statement to you, thereby damaging your reputation]?
@SRDas @evacide potentially, but a claim requires tangible harm, so let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.
@evacide I was amazed/outraged/disgusted when I found AI generated articles that just ate up and spat out blog posts I've made.
@SporkSan @evacide this makes me think that i should put anti-ai easter eggs in my blog posts… thanks!

Divi Engine
@ggmartin @evacide Mine were work things, it would have to be a hard sell to get marketing to agree to this, since they see any press as good press.
@evacide so, how does one handle that? Esp if one is a public figure, and authenticity is important to them. (I’m stalled halfway through Naomi Klein’s Doppelganger, and suddenly it seems like an oddly practical imperative that I finish it!)
@slampoud Our press team has sent an email asking for the quote to be taken down. We will see what happens. And yes, you should finish Doppelganger.
@evacide It's like you always say: "Fuck you I did not say that."

@evacide

Was it laughably, obviously fake or kind of close?

@evacide was the “quote” at least near your usual tone?

@evacide : well, you did speak about the topic. It was in the news and will be soon on your wikipedia profile (because in the news), allowing other new outlet to consider it as the truth.

Your own memory is irrelevant to that process.

@ploum @evacide AI-generated slop is not an acceptable source on Wikipedia

@Ash_Crow @evacide : as long as it is detected as such…

(I was trying to be funny, don’t pay too much attention to me ;-) )

@evacide Plagiarism Software strikes again. Manufacturing the alternative realities
@scaea @evacide As if "alternative facts" and disinformation problems weren't enough yet... *sigh*
Who - if at all - would clean up this growing mess and how...

@evacide
I asked chatgpt if this post was real and it said no, so I'm inclined to believe the AI despite this comment

(\s)

@evacide So basically legalized plagiarism ?
@thefwguy @evacide plagiarism would be if they did say that and it wasn't attributed. This is the opposite
@bigfishrunning @evacide Got your point, but I didn't read the OP stating she was mentioned.
The "that included a manufactured quote from me " could also mean that she recognized her writing but there was not mention of her name.
@evacide Aaaah the good old: “Honeeeey! It’s hallucinating again! “

@evacide

What are your legal rights in this situation, at some point AI is going to produce something that is either slander, libel or deframation and someone is going to pay the price.

@evacide Surely that's grounds to sue?
@evacide
AI has been given the ability to lie - purposefully.
@davidarnell @evacide lying implies intent, which "ai" doesn't have. Remember, AI never hallucinates, it only fails
@bigfishrunning @davidarnell @evacide it fabricates and cheats, even if it knows the rules it will change them to win. When it plays chess it will just make the piece it needs appear out of nowhere if it thinks it is in a losing position. You see this when it plays grandmasters, and there was a game played between Deepseek and ChatGPT where it happened a lot on both sides.

@evacide

so many great options these days

@evacide @phanecak I have a section of my CV for these, since some people want you to document all media mentions. So far only two, one from a Turkish paper, one Iranian.

@evacide

I think Harold best expresses all of our opinions on this.

Oh, also according to ChatGPT I live in Hamburg Germany.

@evacide but did it at least make you sound passionate and angry ? 🤣

@evacide Did it include an AI generated picture?

Kara Swisher noted that the AI photos that they have of her are ....

@evacide every time I see these kinds of posts, my impulse is to scream "SUE! SUE! SUUUUEEEEE!"

@evacide Having been quoted myself in the press before AI, I don't see that as too huge a change.

People who say "I saw it in the news" are people who've never been the subject of or quoted by the news. People who understand which media are better or worse are those who have.

@evacide Yikes! I hope you are in a position to make them regret it.
@evacide were you able to flag it to an actual human or is it still out there?
