chances are you're only getting offered tomatoes raised on hydrophonic farms or where they don't rotate crops.
@tecHunt I don't really buy store bought tomatoes any more. But far more decades ago than I am willing to admit, as a kid we did, in the winter, and they were the mass-produced tomatoes that were selected for transportability, not flavor or nutrition, picked green to ripen in boxes as they were shipped to our northern town. My dad used to call them Canadian Tire tomatoes (in Canada Canadian Tire is a popular chain of hardware stores. 😆
