Just cancelled my upcoming Airbnb reservation. Please do the same and spread the word.

Airbnb’s co-founder Joe Gebbia is joining Elon Musk’s DOGE

Gebbia, a close friend of Musk, has praised DOGE’s work and defended it against criticisms on social media

@mathcolorstrees
A suggestion on how to move forward: check out fairbnb.

@asbjornn @mathcolorstrees

Is this good? I am not sure what cooperation in that case means, like is it owned by the people working there?

Of course I think it is preferable to airbnb just by the nature of being a smaller competitor.

@TheSecondVariation @mathcolorstrees I honestly dont know. I havn’t used them.
But from reading about them for 2 mins, I am convinced they are less evil than airbnb. And I am strong believer in “do not let perfect get in the way of better”. So I will spread the word about them until someone shows me an even better choice.
More detail: a great amount of this guy’s wealth is due to the fact that he owns A LOT of Airbnb company shares. I didn’t check to see how closely he is affiliated with the company but reducing Airbnb stock prices is a direct hit to his wealth.
@mathcolorstrees you can note your rental phone number, cancel you Airbnb reservation, and book with the rental directly.
@so4D @mathcolorstrees only downside I see if loss of protection for both host and guest :(
@staustellsimon @mathcolorstrees no, I totally disagree with that! Airbnb is in no way a security either for the host, nor for the guests. If there is an issue, you're facing a multinational company based in San Francisco which doesn't care. You can't even take a legal action because they're above the law.
@so4D @mathcolorstrees hmm ok, but I had a near £700 claim paid out recently due to a guest not looking after the place, which I'd not get if it wasn't a booking through AirBnB
@staustellsimon @mathcolorstrees let's say, you got lucky that time...but the Airbnb compensations are very random and very much time and energy consuming. If you rent directly to guests, you should always ask for an insurance policy, and the insurance would do the job more reliably than airbnb....
@so4D @staustellsimon This is a real issue. But I try to go for places that have really high ratings. Unfortunately it excludes new listings. I imagine hosts can do the same if the renter’s rating is visible. Is that not the case?
@mathcolorstrees @so4D the two guests I’ve had serious troubles from, both had high ratings and still do, despite some questionable reviews. Really odd. We’re encouraged to use Instant Book, that has some protection should we not like the reviews etc
@staustellsimon @mathcolorstrees in my experience, reviews are not really significant, unless it's really bad.
@so4D @mathcolorstrees as a host, there is a sense of not wanting to be too truthful, as after all, they know where you live, so it's more what we don't say than what we do. The first troublesome guest, we didn't leave a review, the 2nd and really bad guest we did, and despite AirBnB having to pay out, they are still on the platform, still making bookings and getting more (positive) reviews. I guess they just didn't like us and took it out on our property. They didn't leave us a review which surprised us.
@staustellsimon @mathcolorstrees same here , I had 2 terrible experiences 1 as a guest and 1 as a hosts. As a guest, it was actually on booking.com. It was à scam. Booking.com fully supported the host until the end, they are still renting, we lost 400€ and à terrible travel experience, and no legal action possible, while the ad was illegal. That's why I hate these platforms and will try to find other ways.
Does anyone know if there's a list somewhere of popular companies (tech or not) showing reasons why we should boycott them?
@mathcolorstrees
(boost if you don't know)
@narF I saw a short list by NAACP related to companies that cancelled DEI. But I haven’t seen a comprehensive one. It would be a good idea to start and keep updated
@narF I also mean to take companies off the list or add good companies as well for positive support.
@mathcolorstrees: co-founder doesn't mean he still benefits from the business, but it looks like he's still on the Board of Directors and still holds a lot of shares in the company. He's also on the Board of Tesla.

@RichSPK yes, added context here. But also thanks for the added info about being on the board of directors.

@mathcolorstrees @RichSPK He's become a useless appendage as many co-founders are
@mathcolorstrees Todays 🙄🙄🙄 moment. Cancelled my AirBNB account in 2019 so at least that is something I don’t have to do.
@mathcolorstrees DOGE is so "efficient" it's attracting more and more corporate leeches...
@mathcolorstrees I already despised AirBnB for helping make most of the cities I've lived in unlivable. This is really the cherry on top
@mathcolorstrees Okay, another thing to avoid!! Is there a good alternative for such a service?
@nick23 I haven’t looked into them@much but there is VRBO and Booking.com I think
@mathcolorstrees @nick23 I've been a heavy ABnB user, but luckily my next is with Booking.com. They are not an identical service -- weighted more towards hotels -- but there is definitely overlap.Regardless, I'm gonna dump ABnB now. Thanks for spreading the word.

@tbn97 @mathcolorstrees @nick23

As a reminder, Booking.com is owned by zionists, genocide supporters.

@coyeforever @mathcolorstrees @nick23 oh. Another one to dump on the scrap heap then. Their service isn't much to write home about anyway...
@mathcolorstrees @nick23 do VRBO do approvals for both guest and host or is it just a booking platform?
@mathcolorstrees
Airbnb and short term rentals (STR) have taken huge numbers of dwellings and turned them into distributed hotels located in residential areas. In some cases, the conversions exceed the ability of the community to build new housing. Elected leaders interested in creating housing and ending the unhoused crisis should take note.
@mizblueprint @mathcolorstrees I always thought this was a good enough reason to avoid AirBnB. 🤷‍♀️
@mizblueprint @mathcolorstrees
In Berlin you are allowed to rent out an apartment only for a limited number of days per year. Or you need permission to let your apartment as a holiday apartment and then you pay more taxes (if you get permission).
However, administration does not have enough staff to check, so there are lots of illegal Airbnbs in Berlin
@mizblueprint @mathcolorstrees
Are there any elected leaders interested in such a thing?
@mathcolorstrees Thank you for the heads up! Are there any alternatives for short time renting out apartments/rooms?
@forteller I have seen Vrbo and booking.com but others here may have a better idea
@mathcolorstrees @forteller vrbo is a subsidiary of Airbnb
@forteller @mathematicalsynesthesia it is??? I can’t find that info. It says it’s part of Expedia.

@mathematicalsynesthesia that’s incorrect. VRBO is a subsidiary of Expedia Group, and is the major competitor to AirBNB. The two companies are not related at all except that they offer similar services.

@mathcolorstrees @forteller

@forteller @mathcolorstrees I dont know if it still exists but there used to be a Owners direct website where you contact the owners directly
@forteller @mathcolorstrees I generally don't want to give Google traffic, but people can just google "apartment hotels" and it will give map listings of places.
The only benefit of third party portals is them aggregating listings for specific dates.
@mathcolorstrees Good tip. I just removed my #airbnb account. Gebbia can go f himself.
@mathcolorstrees Just deleted my #Airbnb account.

Airbnb

@mathcolorstrees

The privatisation of the US continues.

Yet another reason to hate them...

@mathcolorstrees

@mathcolorstrees Airbnb is a scam. It should be banned.
@mathcolorstrees Why did it have to come to this. Proud to say I've seen ot coming and never did über and stop using airbnb 8 years ago.

@mathcolorstrees

time for a peer-to-peer opensource non-profit to help refugees.

@mathcolorstrees
I swore off Airbnb a long time ago but I’ll double down on it now.

@mathcolorstrees

airbnb and their ilk have destroyed local housing market and raised home value far beyond where they should be

these people are evil

and now they want to do it nationally

@mathcolorstrees all the Airbnb cofounders have been shady af
@mathcolorstrees #uspol Maybe *this* guy is an expert on keeping nuclear weapons safe. 🙄 🤪

@mathcolorstrees TFA indicates he's not ideologically rigid. He's coming after OSHA and FEMA because they're his regulators.

Lobbyists have to be crapping themselves. They depend on regulated company -> lobbyist -> Congress -> regulatory agency. Now the CEOs are just being put directly in charge of personnel of their own agency

@mathcolorstrees God, what an eminently punchable face.
