In order to have a true meritocracy, we should abolish inheritance. Everyone starts from scratch, all the extra cash gets reabsorbed into state schools, social care and the NHS. No one gets a leg up for being lucky - we're all lucky.

@anon_opin we also need to be careful what we identify as "meritorious".

@anon_opin but the question is do we want a true meritocracy? And hopefully the answer is no.

@anon_opin

if there were no inheritance my sweetie (who just inherited her mother’s house) an I would both be living on the streets.

so, no. bad idea.

@howlinhobbit @anon_opin except if there no inheritance, the housing market would look very, very different, and you probably wouldn't have to rely on luck to be in the position to inherit a house or be homeless.

Inheritance is one of the main reasons the housing market is so fucked.

@howlinhobbit @anon_opin

No inheritance in a capitalist society would mean that many people would suffer from poverty, etc. No inheritance in socialism, where people are given the basic necessities for living no matter their social status, would prevent people from accumulating wealth that they could use to exploit others while simultaneously using that wealth to benefit society as a whole.

@howlinhobbit @anon_opin But inheritance has been one of the main drivers of ever higher housing prices, so if there were no inheritance you probably would've been able to buy a house without it.
@howlinhobbit @anon_opin Can neither of you afford to rent a small flat like normal people?

@anon_opin

In a meritocracy, where economic goods and political power are vested in individual people based on ability and talent, what about those with no abilities or talents? No, this reeks of "Survival of the Fittest" Social Darwinism, or at least something that would inevitably lead to it. Power should be held democratically by all, and goods and resources should be distributed based on need, not on who's stronger or smarter. I agree that inheritance should be abolished, though.

@anon_opin I've always said that there should be an absolute, 100% inheritance tax. Either you spend in when you're alive, benefitting your family and the economy, or the state takes it to invest in infrastructure and public services, benefitting everyone and the economy.

The current system props up a lot of unhealthy economic behaviours that would otherwise have self-corrected long ago.
