By limiting our thinking about #EVs to the idea that it is necessary for them to travel at high speeds (100 kph+) and long distances (500 km+) on a single charge, we are simply perpetuating all the problems of the old #HappyMotoring fossil fuel culture, while creating several new nightmares (lithium mining, fire hazards, worse brake/tire pollution, electric grid upgrades, etc).

High speeds and long distances require vehicles to be exponentially more massive to withstand those stresses.

We can and should build more ultra-light, low-speed, short-range #EVs.

My ideal #microEV would be weatherproof/climate-controlled, carry two 100 kg adults with two sets of carry-on luggage (100 kg total, or two small children, or briefcases+groceries, or two guitars+amps), with a 30-45kph top speed and a 60-100km Winter range.

Such a vehicle would not need a gigantic, heavy battery, heavy crash-proofing, or heavy-duty construction and components that can withstand high road speed stresses.

In the US, we already have the #infrastructure to support this. Many jurisdictions already permit operation of #NEVs (neighborhood electric vehicles) without licensure, and of course we already have the #streets.

It's just that we're stuck in this# highway speeds/long distances/huge capacities model of personal #transport.

It's the speed and the distance, primarily, that have made #MotorVehicles the monsters they have become.

It doesn't require a tech fix, just #regulation.

It's *that* we *can* go so far, so fast, with so much cargo in #MotorVehicles that has allowed us, and even *caused* us, to build our built #environment, our #architecture and city #planning, the way we have, to expect and demand large swaths of private real estate and ubiquitous high speed #roadways.

#Technology cannot rescue us from the problems we created by poor decision making. Only the will to regulate can do that. We must withdraw the horizon to a shorter radius for private #transport.

Once we simply *cannot* continue to travel so far and so fast with so much stuff, we will realize that rebuilding our population centers to support great #density with greater #dignity is sane, sensible, satisfying, and #sustainable.

#Urbanism IS the future, whether you like it or not. We can do this the right way, or we can do it the painful way. It's up to you, but the choice will be made, with or without you.

@gcvsa
There are a couple Arcimotos that I see around my neighborhood, and they look just about right for a nev. Unfortunately I think the company went under.

@mmalc DId you read my posts? A 400-mi range and a 0-60 mph time with a 100 mph top speed is NOT what we need, and NOT what I am talking about, and carbon fiber is NOT sustainable in any way.

That little eggshell is a deathtrap.

@gcvsa

Yes, I did read.

Its very existence refutes your basic assertions.
