Welcome to the Age of the Coward—where billion-dollar corporations crumble faster than a wet paper bag, and craven CEOs like Bob Iger and Tim Cook prove their “values” were just expensive PR stunts with an expiration date.

This Is the Age of the Coward

The Age of the Coward is here, where America’s most powerful corporations, once eager to preach their values, now fold like cheap umbrellas at the first gust of political wind.

The Index.
@Daojoan don’t forget the #ncaa. Imagine if they’d just said Nah we’re not going after trans women athletes. And then Trump cuts off federal funding to the colleges and there’s no more D 1 sports that hedge fund spawn can use to get in.
@Daojoan heh. Next star wars spinoff will have to be about minions of the empire struggling for victory against rebels who struggle to live off renewable energy in an artic wilderness planet called green-world and refuse the help offered to improve their miserable lives
@Daojoan what an invigorating read, thank-you.

@Daojoan

<< Tim Cook who is letting his company resume advertising on X despite its owner's public embrace of Nazism while donating to Trump's inauguration faster than you can say "courage" – his favorite word when removing headphone jacks, apparently less applicable when removing his backbone. >>

a great text!

@Daojoan Great piece. Thank you for sharing it with us.
@Daojoan I was literally just thinking today how I once actually took comfort in some of these companies being more progressive and then *poof* they capitulated faster then anyone. I used to think that money could give you freedom, but clearly it can make you a slave as well. Maybe it does that more.
@Daojoan by the way this article made me happy I looked at mastodon today. Thanks for writing this.
@Daojoan Who in God's name ever expected CEO's to have values? Do y'all seriously not understand how capitalism works? Getting outraged when your deeply flawed understanding of the world turns out to be deeply flawed is ... dumb.
@Daojoan It's not just large corporations like Apple, but also smaller non-profits who actively lobby the government. They are also implicitly bending the knee by holding their tongue and carrying on as usual. The money is more important than people.

@Daojoan I think you have this backwards. Those megacorps never stood behind those values that they preached. They stood behind them because it made money. Years ago there was a comparison between russian and other social media accounts of those megacorps. Only in america and europe they changed the profile pic to the one with rainbow.

And now the cost of doing business will skyrocket if they keep the DEI and LGBT+ stuff.

@Daojoan
From the article:

"The brazen hypocrisy staggers the mind. Disney, which commands a market cap larger than the GDP of many nations, can't find the courage to even wait for court challenges? Meta, which regularly boasts its power to connect billions, suddenly can't muster the strength to defend its own policies and users? These aren't businesses making tough choices – they're paper empires run by moral cowards—simpering, whimpering, and weak."

@Daojoan
They're showing their true colors & character and it's not so new...
@Daojoan they wouldnt do it if this country wasnt a bunch of crack addicts.
@Daojoan CEOs and higher management always say what's most convenient (typically: what people want to hear). When they stood behind some movement, it was obviously a convenient thing to do. They're there for money not for values. The folks with values seldom make it that high up the corporate ladder.
@Daojoan It's the age of lists. Nobody wants to be on a list.

@Daojoan this was fantastic writing.

From a distance these guys seem invincible, but the signs of petty ego are everywhere. Most of us remember the days of Steve Jobs cult. Even just things like Bob Iger writing about moral leadership...every time this class opens their mouths in public it's to lionise themselves, but most of them know to keep it to business circles where flatterers live and honest people don't.

Keep calling them cowards, it's the best pain point we have to push back.

@Daojoan it always freaked me out that the TV news guy paid Trump $15 million dollars because he said Trump was guilty of rape... When the technical term is sexual assault... And the fine the in the case was 5 million dollars... So he made the 10 million profit by raping that lady... That's a successful business model...
@Daojoan it's helpful to point out the hypocrisy, but that doesn't mean this is _now_ the age of the coward. We've been living in that age for decades at this point.
@Daojoan The funny thing is that what they are doing doesn't make any kind of business sense either.
@Daojoan My Apples all have arrows through them. I will adapt.
@Daojoan people have been calling me cynical and paranoid when I've been saying you should not trust the corporations. Imo they have always planned to pivot. And they have been making low quality stuff precisely to later pivot and blame the low quality on minorities and women. Like they ruined marvel for it. It was a massive culture engineering operation.

@Daojoan
They were never values, it was always only political correctness. Corporations have only one value, "make more money".

Political correctness got a new definition, so the tunes they are playing and the texts they are singing to the tunes have changed. And they had all the time from November to prepare new versions of the corporate guidance documents what is politically correct now.

@Daojoan You're a bit late to the party, America. The exact same thing happened in Europe 90 years ago. And to this day most corporations in Germany are suspiciously quiet about their history between 1933 and 1945.

Capitalists do not care about anything other than profit, they never have and they never will. They will say whatever makes them popular in the moment.

See also Cory Doctorow's latest post about premature anti-facists.

@Daojoan well, written, albeit I would think Iger is not a great example, based on what I've read and researched about him in the past, he always seemed like a leader who only cared about maximizing his and large privileged shareholders value and nothing else...
@Daojoan I'm actually not even sure if they are human enough to be cowards. Humans are just numbers in their profit equation, and if working with fascists brings more profit than having any values, they will instantly drop the values.

@Daojoan I don't think anyone ever believed Iger to be more than a money-grubbing scumbag.

Cook was a surprise. Openly gay CEO, philanthropist, long-term supporter of the Democrats, and...fascist supporter?

I guess you don't become a billionaire by having any ethics or morals to commit to.

@Daojoan #Greed is the ONLY motivator for CEOs
@Daojoan Well, they saw the vote tally...
