Awww they ran out of red angry letters and went back to the green ones. #TVLicenceFee #tvlicenceletter #tvlicense
Thing is, now they've stopped being quite so arsey, I'm thinking about buying one so I can watch iPlayer again. Maybe.
@philpem wait - is that a real letter? You have to have a license to watch TV? Like over the air TV, or is this some kind of cable/satellite service thing?
@N3VEM yep absolutely 100% legit. Any type of live TV (internet, terrestrial, cable or satellite) or BBC iPlayer.
It explicitly doesn't cover DVDs/video discs and tapes.

@philpem @N3VEM

No, it isn't, You can watch ITV, C4,C5 Etc (paid for by adverts)

or Freeview, (not live I suppose)

Just not BBC services or Iplayer. (unless you pay for them some other way)

@Extelec @philpem @N3VEM No. Any "live" broadcast is covered whether it's BBC or ITV.
@[email protected] @Extelec @philpem @N3VEM
Yep, it was a 'receiving' license for any radio or TV broadcast, originally iirc, but I think radio was excused it eventually.
@N3VEM @philpem In many countries the public broadcasting services aren't tax-funded (for independence reasons), but funded from a mandatory fee the broadcasting services collect directly from the owners of "broadcast receivers".
@N3VEM @philpem Back in the day here in Germany when you e.g. needed a TV as a monitor, you would have to get your antenna jack soldered shut and officially sealed to get a fee exemption.
You would get a discount if you proved you only owned radios and no TVs.

@philpem a) You're not supposed to let them in.

b) tell them you do SSTV instead to confuse them.

@M0KHR a) I don't. But you have no choice if they get a search warrant.
b) They'll probably take that as an admission and use it to get a warrant. Better to politely ask them to leave then escort them to the boundary line.
@philpem Do they actually go into your home to make sure you’re not watching TV?
@ozzelot They stand outside and peer in the windows like a bunch of perverts, and sometimes knock on the door. If they really convince themselves that you must be watching TV, they sometimes get a search warrant and show up with the police.
That's a fun one because while the search warrant is for the TVL, anything the police see that they don't like - they can file as evidence for other crimes.
Sort of "You weren't guilty of TV licence evasion but you were of littering"
@philpem That sounds extremely unfun.
@ozzelot Depends how much you piss them off, I suppose. There are people who make sport of stringing TVL on for as long as possible... and I'm starting to see the amusement value.
@philpem I had these letters for 16 years. Finally gave up in 2017, and M7BNU bought herself a TV license to watch Doctor Who.
@M0KHR I'm leaning that way myself (getting one to watch Dr Who). It might break my Youtube doomwatching addiction.
@philpem
LOL are they coming with that again?
@Sonic2k don't they always?
@philpem
I thought it was a thing of the past.. forgive me, ours here has given up trying to collect license fees, but mainly because the entire country stood up to them and the sheer majority taking up streaming services on the mobile phones
@philpem The "code" gives my OCD issues.
@terrencefoxfur It's properly tweaking me too. Whomever picked it is a cruel sod.
