Apple Resumes Advertising on X

Apple this month started advertising on X for the first time in more than a year. The company had stopped advertising on the social media platform in...

to everyone defending Apple in the replies:
@nileane please bring this type of criticism to MacStories. This deserves more than just "Whatever the reason, though, it’s not a good look for Apple."
@nileane Apple could afford not to do any advertising basically anywhere and they'd still make billions a quarter, it's so bizarre to see people bend over backwards to defend them still selling ads on X lol
@nileane I love this video so much, I watch it every few months ❤️
@nileane a year ago, it was "hedging one's bets". Right now, it's just "sucking up to power".
Apple - or any other corporation - will never make decisions based on what's right or wrong, just on what's profitable and what isn't.

@nileane yeah… pretty clear evidence they’re just the same as other big tech in this area.

I emailed Tim to challenge him on his support of Trump, politely of course, and unsurprisingly got no response.

@nileane @tante
I feel so let down by Apple, without a word of justification. This is a total capitulation by the only big tech company which occasionally distinguished itself from the pack.
Why is there no #MAGAFAM hashtag in heavy use at this point?

@fheinderyckx @nileane @tante

Longstanding aggressive tax avoider; unconscionable markups; suicides and deaths at FoxConn; basically BSD Unix.

What's there to like about Apple?

@nileane
"as i need another reason to boycott apple." is not a first strike.

i have heard rumors of tesla phone. it seems there is one now.

@nileane I was wondering. For me it’s three strikes against Apple since the start of the year. (The inauguration, the Gulf of Mexico rename, advertising on Twitter again.) For the first time after many years with Apple, I’m considering moving away. Any such thoughts for you yet?
@fmy I’m afraid moving away to Google products and services is not a better option in any aspect
@nileane Definitely not - my gmail account is the other item I’m still thinking about how to replace. My main option would be some Google-less Android phone, etc., which obviously no one ever talks about except on Mastodon, but it’s a big step.
@fmy @nileane What's this about a Gulf of Mexico rename? How was Apple involved?
@nileane I'd boycott Apple if I hadn't already been doing so for years...
@pa27 u want a cookie?
@nileane 😀 Choc chip if you have one...
Apple's behaviour is despicable though, but then they also fund the orange blimp.
@nileane thats what companies do in dictatorships - you know countries where the richest person is also in the government for some reason and also controls a media company
@nileane Bow to those in power. Disgusting.
Just glad i don't own any Apple products and don't use X.
@nileane Let this underscore the fact that to companies, people do not matter, public opinion matters. And at the moment, the perception for the people running these companies is that public opinion is fascist as hell.
@nileane Boy. Tim Apple sure is a dick.
@nileane Why does no one in power have any semblance of a spine?
@nileane @gudenau unfortunately having a spine isn’t profitable enough apparently 😞
@nileane His "Roman salute" convinced them.
@nileane I am a lifelong Mac user. Met my first in 1984. And now, on the threshold of retirement I’m thinking the unthinkable: Linux.
@sellathechemist @nileane GNOME has gotten very good. 🤓 I say that as a diehard Mac user for 25 years.
@nileane The billionaire clique is closing its ranks.

@nileane

It's probably the same old "money talks" situation ... bloody unfortunately!

I bet Apple realized they lost revenues from potential Twitter/X users ... and that hurt them more than the reason they decided to stop the advertisement a year+ ago.

@nileane It’s just so fucking depressing. It feels impossible to excise everything that the current cesspool is touching, so everything is a compromise of values vs being able to get on with life.
I’d love it if I was missing the simple easy answer to all the uncomfortable difficulties which come from being informed, but also caring about things 😅

@nileane

I guess #Apple wants all the #Nazi bots to buy their hardware?!? Because that's who's on Xitter now.

I bet 0% of their target market is on that platform or is influenced to buy anything due to ads on that platform.

Tim Cook may end up finding himself in a "Sexuality Reassignment Camp" no matter how much he financially supports the fascists in charge.

There's historical precedent for the victims to initially support their oppressors:

@nileane Sadly, it looks like Elon suing companies is working.
@nileane Although I cannot say I’m surprised, it's still extremely disappointing. I'm sure Apple could survive very well without posting or paying for advertising on X
@nileane I bet Tim Apple is behind this again. He has a history of making bad decisions.
@nileane I just wrote to Tim Cook to express my disgust at this, the capitulation on Gulf of Mexico, etc. I hope Apple servers are being inundated by such messages. Sadly, even if they change course on the X ads, Gulf of Mexico, etc… the damage is done. Maybe there was never something special about Apple at any point, but there’s certainly no chance of them making people feel that way now.

@nileane

Looks like it’s time for me to figure out Android…

@nileane
Let’s all send him a mail ([email protected]) to express our feelings. And ask him to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the gulf of the orange toddler.
@nileane Nobody these days wants to be on a list... Besides, Apple was never the good guy. Good guy friend to the creatives was a marketing strategy and a damn effective one.
@nileane they're scared and paying Elon as a bribe
@nileane So many people keep trusting their iPhones and I have no idea why.
Elon Musk's X sues Lego, Shell, more companies over advertising 'boycott' from platform

The new complaint adds Nestlé, Abbott Laboratories, Colgate-Palmolive, Lego, Pinterest, Tyson Foods and Shell International to the list.

USA TODAY

@Npars01 @nileane

Hmmm.

If this insane set of lawsuits goes anywhere, those companies should limit their advertising to the most brutal anti-Mush, anti-Trump, anti-Tesla stuff they can muster.

If he rejects their ads, it’s not their fault that they’re not advertising on Twitter.

What legal system would support such nonsensic claims?

Citizens United v. FEC - Wikipedia

@nileane Yeah, I think I just bough my last Apple product.
Kid really wanted an ipad for Christmas.

We have some Apple stuff around the house, some Macbooks and a few iMacs. I will keep them around and fix them till they break in a way I can't fix them anymore. When that happens we will move on to some opensource projects.

No more Apple stuff for us...

@nileane

I did a web search to see if anyone had already made jokes combining #overtonWindow and defenestration.

I didn’t find what I was looking for, but I did find a 2019 academic paper about infectious disease research entitled

> Widening the Overton Window—While Avoiding Defenestration

I can’t speak to the article, but I do like the title.

Maybe a less commonly used word, to defenestrate can mean 1) to throw someone out of a window, or 2) to remove or dismiss someone from a position of power or authority.

@nileane it's clear that all the big ones like meta, apple and others are chasing after Musk to be well seen.
@nileane or they just dont care because they'll be the last ones to suffer from nazism
@nileane I don’t think they are nazis themselves. It’s either they think that a significant part of their clients are nazis and advertising in X makes sense since that’s where they hang out now, or they understand that it’s the price of doing business under this government. Both sensible decisions for a company that size but yucky. It’s probably a bit of both unfortunately.
@nileane This is unacceptable. I’m deeply disappointed.
@nileane we must think of the shareholders.
@atpfm as a consumer it’s not like it’s easy to “go somewhere else”. Maybe cancel some services. I don’t know how we can loudly say to Apple that this is not ok.
