I have attempted to configure/self host #NextCloud with an office suite on and off for well over 5 years. It never quite works. I have tried multiple approaches with and without docker and possibly some other variations.

The terminology is contradictory and confusing (Document Server/Collabora…). I have been online since before the web was invented (Fidonet), I registered my first domain in 1999, I do web apps for a living. Is it me or is NextCloud with an office suite hard to set up?

@marcusgreen I migrated from owncloud to nextcloud approximately 2 years ago. Initial #nextcloud setup was on a raspberry pi4 running Ubuntu 22.04. I install nextcloud using snap and #onlyoffice using snap. I am running nginx on a separate pi Ubuntu server. All worked fine. I then upgraded that server to 24.04 and upgraded the snaps to the latest version. I then just plugged the system SSD and data SSD into a pi5 to improve performance. This has been working well for about 6 months.

@gewin

Thank you for the feedback. I am a bit of a fan of the Pi, so I might experiment with that.

@marcusgreen
Lol I fought with Nextcloud too and gave up. Now I have Syncthing set up, it was much easier. I've been a Linux user since 1995 and I think that's the first time I couldn't set up a piece of server software... So not just you!

@hw

I am a big fan of Syncthing which I first heard about from @marxjohnson

@marcusgreen some people recommend the snap of next cloud but some people don’t like snaps.

@tallthom

I had a play with the snap and I have no inherent objection. But your comment makes me think I should have another try.

@marcusgreen the guys in #linuxmatters talked about using the snap with some good results. I tried it a while back and was also successful.
@marcusgreen I haven't had problems with nextcloud itself per se, but the integration with collabora has been the most error-prone component. Running the docker container with the built-in collabora server has at least been stable for many months now.
