#misinformation

On January 28, Elon Musk was the source of the false information that the USAID had transferred 50 million dollars to fund condoms for Gaza, something which Musk suspected was funding HAMAS.

This claim was used by the Trump administration to justify their freeze on foreign aid.

But it was not true. The USAID had spent 50 million dollars on delivering condoms for Mozambique to combat the spread of AIDS.

Mozambique is a southern African country, some 6,000 kilometers from Gaza.

@randahl Hey, that was a honest guess 🤡 🤡 🤡 . Also the orange parroted this double down on money spent as $100 M. 🤡

@randahl Yeah, but most of the people who got those condoms weren't white, so still a waste of money if you're a racist turd, right?

Idiots. All of them.

@randahl In fairness, some condoms did go to Gaza: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaza_Province

You'd think that somebody who lives in America would recognise that placed in different countries would have the same name.

Gaza Province - Wikipedia

@randahl Actually, this particular Gaza is *in* Mozambique …

@randahl I tried to choose the closest possible points between Mozambique and Gaza and I couldn't make it go under 2,895 miles (4,660 kilometers). To be clear, that's 400 miles longer than a flight from Los Angeles to New York (LAX to JFK airport) and more than enough for a Phoenix-Chicago round-trip. Or Presque Isle, Maine, to Cardiff, Wales.

It is, in short, an absolutely embarrassing mix-up and unforgivable for a man running the government.

@randahl

As he is someone who was brought up in #southafrica it seems surprising that #elonmusk was not aware of the existence of a substantial area in #mozambique that was settled by #nguni speaking migrants/refugees following warfare further south in #kwazulu early in the nineteenth century just as other #nguni speakers - the #ndebele - established themselves in parts of #zimbabwe at the same time. The world has many places with identical names which are a long way apart. Basic geography!
