Author #AlanMoore has included a (?) penultimate chapter on the late life of the main character, about 50 years after we get to know him.
Old age. Infirm. Resigned. On the border of terrified. Failed marriage with his true love heavy in memory.
And also the kicker.
Alone and isolated.
I think Alan has included this as a warning to readers - what has happened to many, is happening to many and what can happen to the reader and their family.
A generous bugger who actually cares about people.
