Plugged into Europe! πŸ”Œ

Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have officially disconnected from the Russian power grid, marking a historic leap towards energy independence.

After preparing for the integration into the EU energy market for almost two decades, the countries now have proper infrastructure linking them to the European continental grid.

This EU-supported initiative allows to fully benefit from the European common energy system.

A bold move of resilience and unity πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ͺ πŸ‡±πŸ‡» πŸ‡±πŸ‡Ή ⚑️

@EUCommission

Is it? With only 3 links to outside land?

@beaufils @EUCommission before this moment, there was too little sense to build more. I'd expect more interconnects to appear soon.
@beaufils
It’s only one link for the synchronisation, to Poland. The links to Finland and Sweden are DC, and thus provide no synchronisation.

@beaufils @EUCommission Actually with only one outside link: the LIT-POL AC link between #Lithuania and #Poland. The other lines to Sweden and Finland are High-Voltage DC lines that do not contribute to synchronisation.

A second 3-phase AC line between Poland and Lithuania is part of the Harmony project, that is currently being built.

@EUCommission

European integration is the way to go!

This is a remarkable achievement that strengthens the security of supply of the entire Union, @CGdoppelpunkt!

@EUCommission

Yes, indeed. Unity is strength!

@EUCommission #Konigsberg is not #Russia, it's just under Russian occupation.
@bossito @EUCommission technically, it's internationally recognized as sovereign Russian territory. But we will see many changes within a decade.

@bonkers @bossito @EUCommission

As long as it is fully demilitarized and incorporated into the Schengen Area, I have no problem with Russia retaining the "Oblast of Kaliningrad". Anybody who wants to re-litigate the end of the Second World War has to recognize that the Morgenthau Plan is always a possibility.

Besides, if anything needs attention, it's the final status of Formosa.

@publius most countries in the world recognize the one china policy...

@bonkers @EUCommission

@bossito @EUCommission Whose territory do you think they occupy?

Lithuania, Poland, and Germany all recognize it as rightful Russian territory and make no claims on it.

@bossito @EUCommission
konigsberg doesn't exists anymore.
It's an ancient city that has been destroyed by the russians.
@elCelio @bossito @EUCommission somewhere around the 2010 period they had independence protests fwiw
@EUCommission Time to celebrate in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί

@EUCommission

It looks like the synchronization is already a fact. The mains frequency in the Baltics appears to closely match that of the European continental grid.

Baltic Grid Frequency

@sibrosan @EUCommission

According to the sympower site, the Baltic Grid is still operating in "island mode" and will be synchronized with mainland Europe a bit later today, by 18:00 EET.

@chromatic @EUCommission

According to reports, synchronization was established around 14:00 EET. The close match in mains frequency (small differences may be attributed to measurement method and time delay) confirms this. Earlier this day the differences were much greater.

See e.g. https://news.err.ee/1609600139/historic-moment-baltic-states-synchronize-with-european-electricity-grid

Historic moment: Baltic states synchronize with European electricity grid

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania "successfully" synchronized with the Continental European electricity grid on Sunday afternoon, President of Lithuania Gitanas Nauseda said. "The period of political pressure and blackmail is finally over," he added.

@EUCommission

When the person or country you rely on is constantly bullying you and forcing total reliance simply because they are stronger than you then it's time to leave. It is an abusive relationship.
The first step is always the hardest.

@glutto @EUCommission The first steps were 34 years ago.
@EUCommission And now just sit and patiently wait for the power bills from the "beloved" EU. πŸ˜‚ 🀣 πŸ‘
Fuck yeah! Independence! πŸŽ‰πŸ₯³

Sarcasm node off.

@MartinaNeumayer Freedom never was free.

Freedom from Putin will cost all of us dearly, but it is oh so worth it.
@EUCommission

@MartinaNeumayer This is not about buying energy. They have not bought Russian electric energy for quite a while. This is about severing the connections, and the very technical issue of AC synchronisation. It’s about stability, not energy dependence.
@MartinaNeumayer @EUCommission
What do you prefer? Power bills from Russia or power bills from the EU?
I don't think that russia delivered the power for free.

@gunstick @EUCommission I didn't written anything about country, one or another, nor political thing. I did written about sematic.

And yes, the most nicest thing is to not have any bills at all. That's an true independence. Not being related, dependent on anyone, and anything etc.
Do you think why so many people are going off grid in recent times? Why they don't want to have anything to do with power companies and similar?
That's why.. To not have bills. Not pay extortion to these companies.

@MartinaNeumayer @EUCommission you know what happened to power independent Texas? They got a winter storm and it was horrible.
Having a continental interconnected grid helps.
@gunstick Yes I know about that. Well.. Is nothing really strange nor unpredictable, especially if the infrastructure is not ready for such enormous consumption as it was. That's an simple and obvious physic. Helping? Hmm.. Yes and also no, simultaneously. Because this depends on many different factors. You know, it is not possible to state just: yes or no. We are here at our farm fully independent. Own power, own water, own bio gas and so on. We aren't connected to any grid at all. No issues.

@MartinaNeumayer Same thing as it was with gas. How much did they raise prices? 300 percent in a matter of year? Do I remember correctly? People almost had heart attacks when they saw their bills. It was supposed to be so beautiful, but the stinking shit came out from under the pink wrapper very quickly.
My friend paid circa 250 per month, and now he is paying almost 600 for the same amount of gas. And only a year has passed. One year only! It's a frickin joke! 😑🀬

@EUCommission

@MartinBe You remember correctly. It was exactly a three hundred percent increase. A real nightmare for many households, seniors, etc. But these pathetic EU politicians did not care about this at all. They only pushed through subsequent supposedly ecological laws, confused people and continued their spiral of EU propaganda.
And ordinary people cried because they did not know where to get money for the next pay rises. That's why the whole idea about moving away from this gernan/eu driven mess.
@MartinaNeumayer True and if you only dare to have your own mind or opinion on some topic, then tons of morons who doesn't have any decent arguments will call you troll or something a like stupid. We'll.. That's an actual pitty effect of years of brainwashing. The dumbed down flocks of sheep will dance and clap as their masters tell them to. As the old proverb says: he who laughs last, laughs best. We'll sit and wait, and in a few years we'll see who will have a reason to laugh and who will cry.
@MartinBe That's why many years ago I've learned not to worry and totally don't care about such assholes, fanatics, morons, pseudo-activists, "I know better about you than yourself people", and other scumbags like that. They are absolute waste of time, same as trying to explain them something that pretty obvious is. How was it? Oh I got.. "Don't touch shit because it stinks, and stay away from idiots!". Truly the golden one rule! Fuck them and that's it. πŸ˜πŸ‘
@EUCommission changes the dependency to another source.
@TreborResro @EUCommission a way more reliable source.
@bonkers @EUCommission simply responding to the "energy independence" claim, which seems unlikely anytime soon.
@TreborResro @bonkers @EUCommission it’s about the network synchronisation, not the flow of electric power, duh
@mirabilos @TreborResro @EUCommission also, flow of electric energy. You can't buy the energy from an unsynchronized neighbor.
@mirabilos @bonkers @EUCommission this is a different definition of energy independence than I'm familiar with e.g. producing more energy than consumed domestically.
@TreborResro @bonkers @EUCommission β€œtowards”, although I have the benefit of having read multiple other toots about this in the past few days so the context was clearer to me
@TreborResro @mirabilos @EUCommission for starters, it removes the dependency on a hostile neighbor. Secondly, it allows trading the energy with allies. Thirdly, cutting off that little KΓΆnigsberg land is just a nice feeling :)
@bonkers @mirabilos @EUCommission Again, different usage of term than I am familiar with, e.g. non-reliance on imported energy resources. Hopefully, the implementation of your list will improve the bottom lines of ordinary citizens in these countries.
@TreborResro @mirabilos @EUCommission they are actually producing enough energy, as far as I can tell. But being in the grid allows them to buy or sell the energy, depending on fluctuations in demand and supply. Also, cutting off from Russia will just remove the risk of sabotage from the toxic neighbor.
@bonkers @mirabilos @EUCommission I saw the 2024 Vilnius Declaration potential for exploitable offshore wind generation, if finance and other risks and complexities can be managed.

@EUCommission

It's time do get an independent and sustainable energymarket for whole europe and to end our dependence on fossil fuels.

@EUCommission Just FYI, Russia is also part of Europe.
@Fedihacker @EUCommission only geographically
and mostly - it's in Asia, not Europe

CC: @[email protected] @[email protected]

So what. Turkey is also a transcontinental country and it is part of Europe. In fact, european Russia is bigger than european Turkey. The capital of Russia is in Europe.

@stfn @patryk @EUCommission

so I might start calling it "european" once they're up to the "european" standard, e.g. not inviding their neighbours

CC: @[email protected] @[email protected]

If you want to believe that European Union is the same as Europe I won't try to convince you otherwise.

Meanwhile I'll keep searching for that "european standard". Africa and Middle East may have some words to say about that.

@patryk @stfn @EUCommission

@Fedihacker @patryk @stfn @EUCommission mmmm this thread smells like some long-used footwrap
@stfn @patryk @Fedihacker @EUCommission
russia is mostly an Asian country with some territory in Europe.
@EUCommission Looks more like changing the supplier, changing the dependency.
@EUCommission Eurasia has always been at war with eastasia

@EUCommission plugged into "European union".... Russia is also partly in Europe....

Nice move, though, now how about a real trans EU power grid? It's more than annoying when some parts of the EU burn Energy from renewable sources into waste heat, whilst at the same moment, other parts fire up coal generators....

@EUCommission This is a monumental step for Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania! Disconnecting from the Russian power grid and integrating into the EU energy market showcases resilience, unity, and strategic foresight. It’s a testament to the power of collaboration and long-term planning. A historic leap towards energy independence and a stronger, more unified Europe. πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί
