What to Do if You Have COVID | People's CDC

A guide for preparing for illness, preventing spread to others, managing symptoms, and recovery.

People's CDC
@CovidSafeScouts
I have to say, it's a shame to see this account full throatedly endorsing things like CPC mouthwash and nasal sprays as being proper layers of protection wrt COVID

@vantiss Full-throatedly endorse? Hardly. We’ve posted far more about air cleaners and respirators.

If we were going to full-throatedly endorse any proper layer of protection, it would be to avoid all living beings at all times, at any cost. And barring that, for everyone to be wearing a well-fitted respirator at all times in shared spaces. That’s not wholly reasonable given the way our capitalistic society is currently structured, so we have to allow for the reality that some folk need to go places and there are circumstances where masks cannot be worn and that there are varying layers of imperfect purported protection bordering on superstition that some people find useful.

But, if you have receipts for all the times we’ve promoted mouthwash and nasal spray as proper layers of protection, feel free to present them.

If anyone wants to discuss the validity of CPC mouthwash and antiviral nasal sprays for use in any phase of Covid mitigation, here’s an opportunity to infodump. #CovidSafeScouts

@CovidSafeScouts I appreciate the response, and I want to be clear my reply wasn't to be a hater or dunk on you. The reason I was disappointed is specifically because I don't typically see you mention those sorts of things - and then saw it listed in a thread of other "badge" criteria - so I thought I'd say something - endorsing something doesn't mean you don't prioritize other stuff

there are varying layers of imperfect purported protection bordering on superstition that some people find useful.
I think it would be best to maybe not have a post like that if that's how you feel about those "layers", but otherwise I think a disclaimer that more softly words that quote would be worthwhile

@vantiss You’re welcome to share your specific objections to the products and any sources you’ve seen to back it up, if you have them. Otherwise, it’s not entirely clear what’s prompted your disappointment and vagueness doesn’t help us to consider alterations to our materials.

I wrote something myself on cpc mouthwash a while back that I'll try to find one day soon

elle (@[email protected])

Attached: 2 images I think this is the best writeup I've seen on the (lack of) evidence for the efficacy of nasal sprays as a "layer of protection" against #COVID / #COVID19 - [Reddit link](https://www.reddit.com/r/ZeroCovidCommunity/comments/1iv64oi/there_is_no_convincing_evidence_that_nasal_sprays/) - [Substack link](https://substack.com/home/post/p-157693460) > There is a lot of misinformation out there about nasal sprays preventing COVID-19. Unfortunately, there are no convincing studies showing that nasal sprays prevent COVID-19. The published studies investigating whether or not nasal sprays prevent COVID-19 each have major issues, which I will detail here. > > I have a PhD in biochemistry and one of my PhD projects was on COVID-19. The main takeaway of this post is that there is no sound evidence that nasal sprays prevent COVID-19. Thus, nasal sprays should not be used for COVID-19 prevention in place of effective measures such as high-quality well-fitting respirators, ventilation and air purification.
