This is the official Wikipedia photo for Storeria dekayi and ... I don't know how to say this nicely but I think someone has been editing their own article.

Of all the snakes to have a "strike you!" pose ... I can't think of any less appropriate.

These are tiny little snakes that live in NYC parks and they eat snails and worms. This "fierce" pose? A preamble to a mild "gumming" at best... running away is more likely.

Anyway. Good for you little brown snake.

@futurebird This poor baby looks so scared though! I want to pat it on the head and tell it everything will be okay. (I resign myself to the fact that it does not want headpats.)
@neia @futurebird if it's cool out and you pick it up calmly it will settle down and enjoy your warmth. they are even cuter irl.

@futurebird

Snek is quite adorable and deserves boops. Clearly.

@futurebird 😍😍😍

@ics

This would be like if the article for "common sparrow" featured a bird with a giant grasshopper in its talons, shrieking wings open as if in triumph for the kill.

@futurebird Indeed. And tbh, that picture above is just also so cute.

@futurebird @ics

i've always viewed them as rather fierce

but, i'm not a songbird, so yes, the point is the level of threat they pose to us, which is nil

@benroyce @futurebird @ics Just don't pick your nose right after you handle one.

@beaq @futurebird @ics

fediverse:

"ha ha, these cute animals, they are harmless"

H5N1:

"they are indeed. cute vessels for me to make my introduction. hello there, how are you doing"

@futurebird I saw one of these little tough guys in the Cuyahoga Valley Park. Made me laugh out loud when it coiled up into it's strike pose.
@futurebird maybe they're singing show tunes?
@mothninja @futurebird
This is •very• clearly what’s happening that photo.
@futurebird
I don't know how accurate it is but i remember an anarchist flyer that said 85% of snake bites are on the hand or wrist, so if you don't want to get bitten by a snake the best thing to do is to not harass them
@futurebird honestly without teeth it just looks like it's smiling
@futurebird So cute! Reminds me of Thurston Waffles the cat screaming while striking a similar pose.
@futurebird I'd just tiptoe away and leave the wee guy in peace!
@futurebird Looks very happy to see the cricket you brought.

@futurebird Probably the *cutest* "strike you!" picture ever.

Also this is begging to be given speech bubbles and turned into a "happy snake"/"chatty snake" meme.

@futurebird It looks like it just finished telling us the punchline of a joke.
@futurebird Looks like he just told his best joke—and is anticipating the reaction.
@futurebird THIS IS A GOOD HAPPY SMILING SNEKEY BOI!
