Hi, I'm a computer programmer who is too old to hire in the US. Looking for any jobs in non-fascist countries. I can do all sorts of wackadoodle things with computers and am also quite stylish.

#getfedihired

This has become popular, so I thought I might add in some of my relevant experience:
I've migrated the largest gay BBS to the web and successfully kept payments flowing despite the clearing house forbidding lgbt content.
I've programmed eeproms in assembly.
I've built a pc expansion card
I've toured more than 100k miles with punk bands
I've built a classification engine that became a seo machine and turned into a top-500 web site
I've managed hundreds of physical servers and a muskian CEO who stiffed every vendor contract I set up.
I've fixed scanning dye lasers.
I've built an apache plugin to do auth against Sybase because we had a cracked version of sybase and that was the only way we could afford a relational database
I've redone my entire house in hardwood flooring.
I've fixed a carburetor while the van was moving.
I can do the NYT Sunday times crossword puzzle in 25 minutes if my much smarter wife helps me.

Hope that helps!

@tito_swineflu
I mean if you were trying to make yourself sound kickass, congratulations you definitely succeeded.

I'm pretty scared about getting hired again in tech as well (I don't need work right now or anything, but I almost certainly will in the next year or two so...) I hope you can find something that works for you. Hell, I hope you can find something that just gets you by for that matter. It's tough out there.

Anyway I would love to hear the story of "fixed carburetor while van was moving" If you have any desire to share. Because that sounds awesome.

@mav 1980's Ford econoline vans with a straight-six have an engine cover that pops off in between the driver and passenger. My carb had been giving me problems, so I was anticipating trouble. The accelerator froze at a medium rpm (2000 or so) so I just had my guitarist hold the steering wheel while I got in there with a screwdriver and loosened the appropriate choke adjustment screw until we could get full control again. This was probably in Nevada or Wyoming or some place where I felt like it wasn't worth the hassle of pulling over.
@tito_swineflu
Ahhh okay that makes perfect sense, I know exactly the van and the cover that you mean. That sounds interesting 😁
@tito_swineflu If I could, I'd hire you off this synopsis alone.
@tito_swineflu you might want to give a bit more details about what you can actually do?... And good luck!
@elduvelle Oh, I've found that makes no difference in the outcome. I've been looking for work for 4 years, so the odds aren't greatly improved by a list of things I've done in the past.
Thanks!
@tito_swineflu @elduvelle I have friends our age who are in the same situation. One of the things recommended was get the term computer programmer out of your head and use the term coder. Not sure if it makes a difference but apparently it's like two spaces after a period.
@jackgangi @elduvelle That doesn't stop people from actually seeing me in the interview. The look of terror on some 28-yo engineering manager's face when I show up for an interview would be comical if I didn't actually need work.

@tito_swineflu

I have no idea what your skills are, or what these people do, but they are hiring - best wishes -
@tailscale

@tito_swineflu ...how is your German?
