i've always told y'all to not rely on the internet archive but now w/ everything going on in the us it's more important than ever

archive everything yourself. download all the ia archives you think you'll need. save everything u might need (eg trans care).

websites:
techy people - use grab-site or heritrix
semi-techy people - set up and use archivebox.io
every1 - save pages by printing to pdf or using archival extensions

videos (yt/tt/etc):
techy - use yt-dlp
every1 - use cobalt.tools

download wikipedia - techy ppl can figure out the other methods but kiwix is the easiest way to do it for most
download transfem science
preserve anything local to you

fyi internet archive pages can be deleted

make sure you have more than 1 platform for contacting your friends

also this is not ia hate post, i love the internet archive!!
but it's operating within us jurisdiction and must follow the appropriate laws, you cannot rely on it as the only place to preserve everything.

do not let *them* erase you, your culture, and your history.

@deviantollam could u post something similar yourself, you have way better reach 🥺
@rebane2001 imho the BEST would be a to come up with a super cheap way to archive massive amounts of data, the 2nd best is build a 1PByte storage server with crazy amounts of second hard #hgst disks

@Linknation i'm already doing the latter myself, but it's not realistic for everyone to just drop 10k on storage hardware unfortunately

there is a lot you can do for yourself without buying stuff and i want to encourage that as much as possible

@rebane2001 it should be more torrent like decentralized? like "u get access to this MASSIVE archive where u also can archive stuff but u will have to reserve a external harddisk for it" know https://jdownloader.org/jdownloader2 ? it kind of fails to backup youtube videos lately :( but it can download A LOT of src imho including facebook videos?
JDownloader.org - Official Homepage

@Linknation decentralized archives kinda doesn't work out unfortunately (you're not the first to suggest/try it). yt-dlp and cobalt.tools also support a very wide range of sites
@rebane2001 what's the url for cobalt.tools i want to try it out
