Boosting for awareness " 1754 – Surgical Procedures for Gender Affirmation in Adults with Gender Incongruence" is now in a consultation phase.

The Australian public health system (aka "Medicare") does not currently have codes for (and hence pay for) gender transition surgery.

"Medical condition this application addresses

Gender incongruence is characterised by a marked and persistent difference between an individual´s experienced gender and the assigned sex, which often leads to a desire to ‘transition’, in order to live and be accepted as a person of the experienced gender."

There is an active proposal being considered to change that.

"We welcome input from everyone. We are especially keen to hear from those with lived experience of the health condition, service or technology the applications are addressing."

@offbyone Ooh, cautiously pleased [not read the linked doc yet]. Afaict though, #Medicare coverage, were it even to be offered for the myriad medical & surgical procedures necessary for one's #transition, would be severely limited or even impossible, without a commensurate increase in safe skilled experienced medical professionals in Straya to actually perform said procedures. When i transitioned in the early Oughties, my decision for Thai surgeries was because of a severe lack of local surgeons at all, & the few available used obsolete techniques that i certainly eschewed. Is the situation better today?

@MsDropbear42 I have read that that is a problem too - I think that the vanishingly small number of trained surgeons in Australia are getting their expertise in Canada? If I recall correctly? It is sending a good message if it gets up though, vis a vis availability of funding. And Medicare codes also opens up other possibilities around private insurance coverage as well.
