@Configures FFS what a nightmare (thanks for sharing)
@susankayequinn oh I meant this as a reply to another toot, not the triangle. Sorry to be so random in my reply to you!
@susankayequinn I saw a vlogger describing that when you do have to resort to a transaction/ purchase for ownership, buy first from friends or community, then thrift, then local small biz, before resorting to any kind of major corp. I liked the emphasis on buying from friends - I've done that for certain services, because although we already had an informal gift economy happening, the time commitment was significant.
@cwicseolfor oh, I like that too! Support the people you have relationships with already, like a hyper local economy first. Very nice.

@susankayequinn

We upcycled our kitchen. Normally people would have thrown it away ages ago. It's 40 years old and fell apart in places. We had some leakage so ... But now it is for us the most beautiful kitchen in the world.
The doors been done, new top layer, but it did cost paint, tools and stuff. Electricity. That's the other side of renovation.πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ We often buy in secondhand stores. We bring things too. They sell it for Africa etc. (Dorcas, The Netherlands).

@Reneebluejay lovely! I love the backsplash peekabo window into a lovely green world! πŸ’š
@susankayequinn
Thank you! I painted that peekabo backsplash windowπŸ˜„ on 2 doors years ago. Design of my daughter. Years later painted over it in a first attempt to renovate. Now my husband has time to help me with the sander and everything. All sites. Then the painting reappeared like an ancient fresco. I shouted, stop! I lacquered it, then painted around with the green paint. The other door still has a hidden painting πŸ˜ƒ
@Reneebluejay what a delightful story!
@susankayequinn
Thanks, i wish you a great day πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™€οΈ
@susankayequinn One caveat: do not spend $200 on craft supplies to make a thing you can purchase for $2. (Said the voice of experience. 😳)

@knottedthreads haha, for real tho...

One of the coolest circular economy things I've found is a local shop called Creative Reuse β€” it's a place where people can donate craft supplies from all kinds of maker stuff,and they resell, basically an alt-reuse store for crafts, which makes soooo much sense.

https://pccr.org/

I think stores like this are popping up more (you might have one near you!), and it's another model people are trying out for #circulareconomy

@susankayequinn @knottedthreads

We've got one of those where I live. (Bonus: it's a ten minute walk from my house.)

I was just over there yesterday, picked up a bunch of impulse purchases ($7.49 😱 πŸ˜‚) Didn't find what I went there for, then before I walked out, took one more turn around and, tucked hidden back a bunch of similar stuff, found β€’exactlyβ€’ what I'd gone in there for. 😊

@susankayequinn @knottedthreads

I'd actually unloaded a LOT of stuff to them over the last couple of years, during utility-upgrade motivated dungings-out. Taking a look at their stock more carefully yesterday, I realized I need to put them in my will for when I shuffle off this mortal coil.

@susankayequinn I would flip it. I understand the pyramid metaphor, but this β€” just like the food pyramid β€” says to me that whatever is on top is β€œbest”

@dx there are limits to any iconography

@susankayequinn For those of us in upstate (functionally oneonta area and east of it) new york, weve just started our own little mutual aid thing.

fingers crossed that it takes off. 15 folks have signed up so far!

@Crow very nice!

@susankayequinn agreed! here's a link, it might give folks some ideas as to how they can do it, too.

@Crow very interesting β€” thanks for sharing!
@susankayequinn After my grandfather passed away, my grandmother raised me on her own using her social security, his LTV Steel pension, and working at a thrift store where she also got a 20% discount. That job and the clothes she got as a result got me through middle and high school and helped us save for my college.
@kevingamin financial need has driven a lot of this in the past, and that's why (I think) a lot of it is associated with poverty. So when people *have* money, the very last thing they would ever do is "thrift" or anything else on the pyramid. And that's what we need to change. We need to make it "cool" to reuse, repair, upcycle, etc... not just for those who can't "afford" new... the EARTH cannot afford new and neither can we, when costs are calculated accurately.
@susankayequinn Not to mention that some thrift stores support services and charities, as well. The thrift store I go to here in my hometown supports our county hospice. I found a Canon PowerShot point and shoot camera there which still takes great pictures and fits in my pocket.
@susankayequinn In the reuse department, I’ve brought my Pebble Time Steel smartwatch back to life and in service.

@kevingamin Nice!

Husband loves being handy with all kinds of stuff so I'm challenging him to fix things more regularly now. Meanwhile, I've got a whole pile of mending I need to get to!!

@susankayequinn nice! Thanks!

Tho my instinct tells me that making is better than many other things.

@revphil each has its own benefits, I think. Borrowing and thrift help us build community. Making is intrinsically satisfying (can be solo or community focused). Even buying, done right, can be anti-capitalist (supporting the arts or small businesses or org/regen farmers).
@susankayequinn Truth! And making can be kinda isolationist. We're need more integrated, resilient community!
@susankayequinn
I demand an exception for books.

@antoinechambertloir hmmm

I’m a big fan of the β€œborrow books” model (on the way to the library now) and I had to buy her book used because the publishers I guess stopped printing it, but my husband would tell you I buy a LOT of books, in part to support the arts, so I’ll allow it :)
