going over 600+ entries in my #password #manager last night made me realize how #fucked up our #modern #life has become: nearly every interaction requires #registering an account. this means you are GIVING AWAY YOU PERSONAL INFO: e-mail, phone number, direction/postcode, social security, sex, name, surname, date of birth, your mother's maiden name/best friends name, favorite movie/book... and MEMORIZE passwords.
imagine going to a grocery and being ask for any of these?!
on-line it's a NORM!
most on-line accounts are hard to remove: at best you have to click through several pages, confirm your password and often confirm deletion via link sent by email. only then you learn, that your data will be removed after 7 or 30 days just in case you change your mind. I won't. and those are the easy ones, often shopping related!
harder cases require filling on-line form and often explaining yourself in an e-mail why do you want to close the account. those are often #academia related accounts
the only positive surprised so far was miro.com. when I logged after 2+ years of inactivity, a pop-up showed offering deleting my account due to inactivity. the only proactive service! thank you #miro! #privacy
surprisingly there is no straightforward information how to close your account in the profile page(s). you have to search internet or through FAQ on the service website in order to find the freaking form that needs to be filled. unfotunately this is true for most #academic accounts I've been deleting so far. #academia #journal #publisher are among the worst here, like you were not expected to close your account, change your e-mail or delete your information...
