This morning it was -4 F and by early afternoon it’s warmed up to 12 F. I think the furnace has turned on just once in the last 4 hours. Many south-facing windows and great insulation for the win!

Our house uses about 750 Btu/hour/delta°F and there is a reasonably large thermal mass inside the outer insulation envelope.

Koji, our older gray boss kitty approves!

More details on the house systems:

- 3 stories, faces 15 degrees east of due south
- concrete basement floor and walls insulated with 2 inches rigid foam on outside
- 2 by 6 walls insulated with blown cellulose
- all exterior walls have 1/2 inch foil-covered rigid polyisocyanurate, boards with taped joints on inner walls — there is no through wood thermal paths
- whole house energy exchange system pulls air from kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms — adds humidity and heat to incoming fresh air.
