Fed up with Meta? Avoiding Instagram or Facebook isn’t enough to stop Meta from harvesting and profiting from your private information. Here’s how to limit Meta’s ability to monetize your personal data. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2025/01/mad-meta-dont-let-them-collect-and-monetize-your-personal-data
Mad at Meta? Don't Let Them Collect and Monetize Your Personal Data

If you’re fed up with Meta right now, you’re not alone. Meta tracks you across millions of websites and apps and its business model relies on your data. If you want to limit Meta’s ability to collect and profit from your personal data, here’s what you need to know.

Electronic Frontier Foundation
@eff whatsapp is also meta, right?
@eff I'm working on it right now.

@eff Also don't forget to check https://www.facebook.com/off_facebook_activity to see which companies are dumping your info to Meta -- in many states you can make them stop doing it

Even if you don't have an account on any of the Meta sites or apps, you still have a "shadow profile" with info fed to them by thousands of companies

Facebook
@eff - Or, just don't use Meta services. Close your account(s) if you have/had them, and request that all data be expunged. (Although they collect data about even non-users.)
@ehasbrouck @eff I tried to make a comment in support of a house bill on the government website in my state (NH) and I got a little pop-up warning that Facebook would be able to track me across websites if I chose to leave a comment in that box. I don’t even have Facebook, but it sure as hell discouraged me from voicing support for a house bill that I support.
@maggiejk @eff - Sounds like an issue to raise with your state rep & senator. But would Facebook be able to track you when you left a comment on legislative proposal if you didn't have Facebook or Meta account or accept cookies from Facebook or Meta?
@eff I would have to have a meta/facebook account to do any of what you suggested. How about a complete list of their data collection IP addresses so I can block them at my firewall to prevent embedded javascript from contacting them?

@eff What is the EFF's opinion on Mozilla Firefox Facebook container?

It's supposed to be running Facebook in a container tab so that it can't access any of the other browsing being done.

@eff

Someone told me that there is no lunch for free.
All that you write and talk in whats app is converted in strategies by Meta.
The AI ROBOT in what's APP are monitoring you!
True ?
Lie ?
Who Knows ?

@eff I've disabled Google Play Services and all Google apps. The only App that refuses to run is Strava, which is no loss, as I use OpenTracks. I have no advertising ID on my phone. Also run Privacy Badger & UBlock Origin on Firefox and reject most cookies, I also have 8 unregistered Nectar cards on rotation.

Not to gloat, but just for a giggle, I downloaded everything Google thought they knew about me... turns out it's around ⅝ of F.All.

@eff I use Opera for Android and Linux. The desktop app has Privacy Badger on top of ad and tracker blocking. The mobile app just has the default add and tracker blocking, but still better than Chrome letting Alphabet and Meta track everything.
@eff very valuable information. Thank you
@eff I am reading but I don't have RayBan or Oculus and I have fully deleted all meta accounts, (Facebook, Insta, and Whatsapp). So how else can I block, do I just have to block pixel manually on my browsers?
@eff Is it better to have no accounts with Meta at all, or to have accounts and only use them to opt out of as much stuff as possible?
@noxypaws @eff Good question, I also want to know.

@eff so your advice to avoid Meta collecting your data is to... [reads article] ...ask them nicely not to do it?

That's rather naïve don't you think? Shouldn't we be talking about how to delete your account, file a GDPR request, and switch to better alternatives?

@eff I am fed up with Meta because they block posts exposing the Israeli massacres in Gaza. They serve Zionism. You can't hide the truth in this day and age. I hate Meta and I hate the murderers. This is the only information you will ever get from me: I hate the disgusting murderers.
@eff they changed how it looks to make it more complicated of course, but its good to have a fiddle around and change the settings for less "personalised adds" as they call it
@eff delete all apps off your phone
