We are determined to keep the online world informative and free from distortion.

Our Digital Services Act gives you more rights online, with extra measures to protect young users.

Very large online platforms and search engines are obliged to:

🔹 stop the spread of illegal content;
🔸 tell users if and why their content was removed;
🔹 give users options to opt out of seeing recommended content based on profiling;
🔸 ban ads targeted to minors;
🔹 be transparent about your interactions with AI.

@EUCommission ban Tiktok, ban X, ban Meta 💪
@spla I wouldn't recommend banning major platforms but at least inform users about better alternatives. Else, this becomes censorship.
@f of course. This place is plenty of alternatives. Make the fediverse the european's official way of sharing things.

@EUCommission why only ban targeted ads to minors?

We grownups need protection as well. Ban them for all.

@amackif @EUCommission That's one aspect of the Act, which is why there's a list. If you want to know the scope of the Act I have attached an article below

@EUCommission google maps removed my listing on google mapse bacause it does not follow guidelines.
There are several dozens of guidelines. Google would not tell me which one was violated.
Will the DSA force google to explain exactly why the listing was removed?
Or is "did not follow guidelines" enough to comply?
@EUCommission "stop the spread of illegal content" but that is the best content
@EUCommission
Nice artwork
Thanks @ely! We'll let our graphic designer know you liked it!

@EUCommission this is great. But is the 'options to opt out of seeing recommendations based on profiling' really enforced?

If so that would really sort the problem out! #microtargeting via #algorithms is how reality gets distorted, and differently for each person.

Really you should ban surveillance (behavioural) advertising - that is a root cause one level deeper. The #RTB system 'bidsteam' data is the fuel for the cancer of the last 25 years: #surveillancecapitalism from #bigtech

@EUCommission things like this make me happy I live in Europe.

We're glad you live here too, @JorisMeys 😊

European Commission

@EUCommission

Without free speech, there is no democracy.
There are laws for all crimes ! We do not need another laws yet , we need make the the ones that exist, rum for the people.

@JorgeLuiz @EUCommission Exactly what the DSA is about. It forces platforms to apply existing laws as well as give people feedback when such laws lead to their content being removed.

I'm not sure if you are agreeing or disagreeing with the post above, but it seems like you want the same things?
@EUCommission sooo any plan on banning Twitter and meta like Brasil?
@EUCommission please make algorithms opt in, users need the choice of a chronological feed. in my opinion it is what’s hurting democracy the most right now with people radicalizing themselves to all sort of sides. thank you

@EUCommission And who controls the controller?

Who decides what is right and what is wrong?

@EUCommission so do something about it and fine these criminal US and Chinese companies bigly and nowly

@EUCommission I wonder if it is somehow possible to tax raise a tax on lies, which is reduced depending on how well the content was fact checked.

As someone said, 'The Truth Is Paywalled But The Lies Are Free' - this needs to be turned around. Spreading misinformation needs to become prohibitively expensive and directly finance proper journalism.

@EUCommission do you know that DSA is a real threat to individuals? Why would DIGITAL SA require a physical address information? For software returns if someone doesn't like it? I know a lot of individuals, who didn't want their personal information revealed on the internet just withdraw their products from the EU market. Huge privacy issue with this BS act. It only pushes more people to the black market...

@EUCommission

> tell users if and why their content was removed;

#Fediverse please oblige to this one too!

At least large instances should publish statistics on their reasons for muting, suspending, deleting accounts. Otherwise the network dynamic is opaque to the users — not unlike on closed algo-driven platforms.

E.g. what is the impact of mastodon.social suppressing Palestine-related content?
@Mastodon

EU top court delivers 'big win' against Apple and Google

In two back-to-back rulings, the European Court of Justice gave the Union's regulators two major victories in their ongoing battles with tech giants, judging that Apple and Google must pay over €15 billion in total.

Le Monde

@dirkblank @EUCommission Apple's case was about low tax rate, that Ireland illegally granted them.

Fines on Meta, Google are just a cost of doing business in the EU for them. It takes years to collect the fines. EU is reactive and always late. There is no reason to feel good about current enforcement practices. Too little, too late.

@emilion @EUCommission

Agreement too late and too little. But people must understand that all 27 EU states must be heard. It is a compromise on the lowest common denominator. That is the price of democracy. Otherwise we would become something like China or North Korea. Limiting lobbying would already help and faster decisions by reducing bureaucracy and better digitalization.

@EUCommission really?
Nice words, maybe start acting some time?

@EUCommission

lol

#DSA fits the paper real well and the ink is very solid.

They do the opposite:

and Musk is a long term TFEU §102 apart from DSA and Zuck is censoring this nice place here https://www.404media.co/meta-is-blocking-links-to-decentralized-instagram-competitor-pixelfed/
and you ?

You do not enforce, you do nothing except that Breton sucks now at the Bank of America. You are still corrupt and it is Perversion of Justice.

You destroyed our fundamental values.

Bluesky Social
@EUCommission
Facebook and Twitter have banned me for reasons I don't know.
@EUCommission please in Spain where in most online sites we are forced to pay to reject cookies to browse in privacy
@EUCommission - Who determines what is illegal?
- What's the definition of a "very large online platform"?
@EUCommission
There is no conceivable right to spread lies and misinformation.
@EUCommission
Opt out is not consent, so you allow sociopathic, anti human corporations more rights than your citizens.
@EUCommission Sadly, Britain's racist village idiots were persuaded by Far Right parties that Human Rights only help brown people, so vote to give them up.

@EUCommission

Idk about the first one, it has implications that don't sit well with me...
