The TikTok ban will deplatform thousands of progressive content creators and skew online discourse to the right. It will consolidate media influence within right-leaning platforms like Meta and X. Over time, I believe this reconfiguration will permanently alter the political landscape of the creator economy https://www.usermag.co/p/the-great-creator-reset

The TikTok ban isn't just a platform reconfiguration, it will reshape the political leaning of the creator economy and permanently alter whose voices get heard online.

While the majority of news content creators across the social media landscape are conservative men, a recent study found that TikTok is the *only* platform where left-leaning news influencers outnumber right-leaning ones. https://www.usermag.co/p/the-great-creator-reset

TikTok also has more than double the concentration of news content creators who identify as LGBTQ+ or advocate for LGBTQ+ rights vs other platforms, and 73% of teens who identify as Democrats or lean left use TikTok, compared to 52% of teens who identify as Republican. https://www.usermag.co/p/the-great-creator-reset

With Meta and X outright embracing right wing ideology, and YouTube becoming increasingly saturated, progressive creators who found a haven on TikTok, now face the near impossible task of rebuilding their communities on platforms that are hostile to their content. Most will fail. https://www.usermag.co/p/the-great-creator-reset

You don't even bother to read and respond to people's replies here... It's not a great look to ask the audience you ignore to follow you somewhere else...
@taylorlorenz @ChrisFerguson Looks like it's more important to defend centralized platforms and systems than to foster this decentralized community. That's probably more lucrative for influencer.
@taylorlorenz
I've never subscribed to TicToc and I don't view anything from that source. But I do read and share your articles on Mastodon. Encouraging more TicToc providers to migrate to federated servers (Mastodon) may be in the best interest for all.

@taylorlorenz yet few seem to be learning the folly of leaping from monolith to monolith when open, federated, alternatives are out there that hugely insulate them from these challenges!

Buuuuuut you can’t get rich by posting a thumbnail of yourself pulling a stupid face on fedi so let’s face it, it’s about money much more than creativity.

@wiredfire @taylorlorenz yep and trying to appeal to the lawmakers by telling them that this means creators are going to lose income isn’t helpful because that’s why they want to do it. They don’t want people to be able to generate income that doesn’t involve punching a clock and working for a boss.

But it’s obviously not about security and China bad if everyone can just go use red note

@maggiejk @wiredfire @taylorlorenz but doesn’t this whole mess just drive home the reality that the people on these megaplatforns—creators and consumers—are just digital serfs anyway, only bound by network effects and the addictive properties of the algorithm rather than by feudal law? They are creating value for a massive corporation that has rendered them so completely dependent that the idea of switching platforms is tantamount to apocalypse.
@taylorlorenz If the sole way Progressives can get audiences is feeding a Lumen style algorithym of TikTok a la Severance, I'd suggest Progressives need to try a little harder.
@taylorlorenz That’s why I simple ignore these platforms and even don’t try to find another heaven. I stay on mastodon, some interesting people are here too. Fine for me and that’s it.
@taylorlorenz I’m not sure YouTube is much better if at all. I recently setup a brand new (OS level) user account for my father, then a brand new Google account, then searched for “news Canada” on YouTube. I clicked one CBC link (a video critical of Doug Ford), and the number 1 top suggestion for the next video was Jordan fucking Peterson. From zero to fully insane right wing nonsense in only a couple of clicks.

POSSE

POSSE is an abbreviation for Publish (on your) Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere, the practice of posting content on your own site first, then publishing copies or sharing links to third parties (like social media silos) with original post links to provide viewers a path to directly interacting with your content.

@taylorlorenz Perhaps they should have shown up on November 5
@anaverageamerican @taylorlorenz so we should just stop fighting bad policy!?

@anaverageamerican @taylorlorenz 😂😂 wait I’m confused, who were they supposed to vote for so they could keep TikTok?

I would argue that by voting Trump in they will keep TikTok because Trump will undo the ban simply because Biden was the one who did it.

I didn’t vote for that pig, but I have noticed that blue MAGA is back to pretending they care about preventing Covid spread already now that they’re not trying to pretend their president ended it anymore.

So maybe they did show up on November 5 and they voted for TikTok by playing 5D chess Since our whole political system seems to be simply about owning the other side regardless of what side you’re on.

@taylorlorenz Although demographics might suggest that #TikTok leans left, it's not necessarily the best platform for left-leaning individuals. TikTok has been caught suppressing #LGBTQ content in the past. Furthermore, TikTok has to comply with both CCP censorship laws and has
bad corporate censorship and data privacy practices similar to those of platforms like Meta.
