🌟 **3D Printer Recommendations Needed!** 🌟

I’m diving into the world of additive manufacturing and need your help!

I’m looking for an inexpensive 3D printer (under $500) that’s perfect for a free and open-source software (FOSS) enthusiast like me.

🔍 Here are my criteria:
- **Budget:** Under $500
- **User-Friendly:** Easier to start with than a Voron 2.4
- **Hacking-Friendly:** I’d love the ability to tinker and customize!

What 3D printer would you recommend for someone just starting out? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments! Your insights will help me make the right choice. Thank you! 😊

@debby Maybe a bit off-topic, but check out https://locat3d.no/

They`re making a platform connecting those who have AM-equipment to those in need of some part that can be made by it.

LOCAT3D

A platform to help businesses find and use local manufacturing capacity on-demand, enhancing business resilience and driving the shift from traditional mass production to flexible…

LOCAT3D

@stovis is that still a going concern? they seem to have 404'ed their registration links for suppliers and clients.

@debby

@debby I have two Anycubics (Vyper and a Proton) and they are not hack or user friendly at all 😮‍💨 Sovol is what I was tempted to buy but I went for a Prusa MK4S at the end. The SV08 would be my choice from the list.
@debby at least to me the Prusa is the most hackable and foss aligned. I previously had an anycubic which I had hacked but it was hard work. Now running a Bambulabs which is very much not hackable, but just works which was exactly what I wanted
@debby Prusa Mini maybe. Is around 460€, that should be 500$. Harb- and Software Open Source. Perfect prints, just working. If you like playing around the Ender 3 is cheaper and is a pleasure to modify, IIRC also Open Source.
@debby
I'd go for the K1 or the K2 maybe. Those seem to have the most capable printers in your budget and are hackable. The only open source printer is the Prusa, but I'd take the Creality and would adjust the underlying Linux to my needs so that I own the printer. With Prusa, there's not a ton of tweaking possible.
@debby I recommend the Qidi q1pro. I'm getting one soon and it has all I need. Do not get a Bambulab printer, they closed everything down.

@debby

I started on an mk3s+.

It’s a solid printer. It’s reliable, and well understood, has a load of mods that you really can take however far you want (check out the Bear mods by @bear_lab )

But it’s older generation, the V6 can’t put out that much plastic compared to modern hot ends, and, personally, I prefer Klipper to Marlin, which is doable on a MK3 but not as easy as something already klippered.

The other choice is probably the K1. It’ll print twice as fast, is reasonably open, and comes with klipper.
