#Manatees in #Florida have always retreated to inland waters when the ocean temps drop. They are very sensitive to cold and catch pneumonia easily in cold water.
Historically they head for the numerous fresh water springs because the water coming out of the ground is generally around 72°F.
#CrystalRiver is famous for this and people go there to swim with the gentle giants. 🙂
The main things Fla Manatees need are protection from power boats and sea-grass to eat. We don't do a very good job protecting them or their habitat. The article goes into this.
Power Plant waste heat outflows are a relatively new refuge, but an important one. The TECO Observation Park South of Tampa is a good place to see them. I made this #video in 2022 after a cold snap...
