Ran out of Rollercoaster Tycoon levels to play on my #gameDad so rather than downloading more I've been playing Deluxe Galaga (the Amiga version) and WOW that game has held up well.
Yaknow when you've got a drawer full of games, more games than you know what to do with, and new ones come and go all the time, but there's that one that you keep coming back to? Deluxe Galaga has been one of those since 1993 lol

It's an Amiga version of Galaga made by a guy who vaguely remembers playing it once ten years ago and kinda enjoyed it.

"Well if I remember enjoying it then it must've been good, right," says Edgar, and codes up this absolute masterpiece of an Amiga conversion. Dude passed away ten years ago but I imagine at some point after MAME became a thing he might've played Galaga and been rather disappointed

So the thing with Deluxe Galaga, the reason why you should try it when you've already played Galaga, is Deluxe Galaga has powerups. BIG powerups. And an item shop every five levels where you can buy the aforementioned big powerups, using coins that the aliens very occasionally drop. They very occasionally drop the powerups themselves also.

There's enough randomness to the drops that even though the levels are the same every time, every playthrough feels very different. This is a game with lots of hidden depth, and because it's a High Score Game, enormous replayability.

(tbh I think every game should have a high score table)

collecting the horrible bad skull icons increases the drop rate of coins and cash multipliers

I played too much Deluxe Galaga and now I gotta send $10 USD to this guy who died ten years ago

Friends, don't be like me, with ten dollars to spare and nobody to send it to, pay for your shareware within the author's lifetime. Settle your debts with the living, the dead don't take cheques

should probably send @llamasoft_ox his five quid for Revenge of the Mutant Camels one of these days

@ifixcoinops

Flashback time: when our house was blessed with the arrival of a Commodore 64, the very first LOAD command was for Attack of the Mutant Camels. Love your work, @llamasoft_ox.

@richardstocks @ifixcoinops thank you, what an honour to be someone's first LOAD on the mighty C64! 🐪

@llamasoft_ox @ifixcoinops

The afternoon ritual was get home from school, fire up the C64, grab a snack while AotMC was loading, then stare transfixed at the screen.

Getting a reply from the legend that helped define not just my youth, but in all honesty my life? The honour is mine, sir.

@ifixcoinops @llamasoft_ox I absolutely owe him more than that, I'm pretty sure I put one of his games on a tape I sold to a guy for $5 once so I really should be in jail.
@mike @ifixcoinops @llamasoft_ox sending the shareware money from games you played in the 90s should 100% be a thing. Imagine how happy you would make the one person that still lives in the same house 30 years later.

@ifixcoinops Oh man, I didn't know he died.😕

Absolutely amazing game.

@ifixcoinops I just discovered there's an official website for the game. I don't know if the downloads on it are the full version but it does note that he passed away 10 years ago.

@ifixcoinops You're probably aware already - but just in case you're not, there's also a sequel called Warblade. (It's the same thing but on Windows, basically.)

Looks like the official site is down, but: https://www.myabandonware.com/game/warblade-pgs

Warblade

Remember Warblade, an old video game from 2003? Download it and play again on MyAbandonware.

@ifixcoinops my main memory of deluxe galaga is my Dad despairing that his four kids would spend hours clocking up highscores on the free version of Deluxe Galaga from a demo disc instead of the games he actually bought up on our cd32, great times.

Also I'm sure that rapid wiggling during warp used to sometimes force a misjump, what's the deal with that?

@ifixcoinops Hey! So, I was an Amiga person back in the 90s and still fire up the CD32 a few times a year, but somehow I'd never played this until tonight. And you're right, it's wonderful! Thanks for posting about it <3
@ifixcoinops when I was small we had those demo discs for PC that sometimes had a full game on there mixed in with all the demos

I found BATS.EXE

I have many years later found out that its full name is "Invasion of the Mutant Space Bats of Doom" and I guess that tracks

I and my siblings loved it so much that when I, as a middleschooler, made a laptop out of paper and pencil and stickers and blutac and a lil stick for the mouse indicator, BATS.EXE was one of the games that I tried to faithfully recreate in pencil/blutac/paper glory. (If you guessed the motivation to make this was "all the computers-but-for-kids toys are rubbish, also I'm grounded from the actual computer", you were right.)

I don't know who made it, or why (but I can guess why), but it has the honour of being the thing that I played instead of Galaga, and once I found out what Galaga was, thought that it was copying BATS.EXE (as you do as a kid with loyalty to the stuff you love)

I also never ever got to the end, but that's par for the course for this kinda thing
@ifixcoinops well, yeah, everyone with a Steam account knows this, with the one game that they’ve got almost 30,000 played hours in and a bunch of zero played hours that they picked up in a bundle that they swore they were going to play

@ifixcoinops

I *still* regularly think about playing M.U.L.E. on an Atari 800 in 1983.

#ClassicGames

@ifixcoinops sometimes I don't play Rainbow Islands for years at a time, but I always come back to Rainbow Islands
@ifixcoinops also you should put Deluxe Galaga on your games recommendations page some time 🙂
@ifixcoinops I didn't realise you were playing it all through - how is it with sticks rather than a mouse?

@PetraOleum tolerable!

I mean obviously way better with a mouse and a computer monitor but still fun enough on the #gameDad to play the whole campaign and some downloaded levels :) On my RG353V you can get OpenRCT2 via PortMaster and I just bought the legit files for like three bucks on gog

@ifixcoinops oh neat! I don't have a gamedad with joysticks but if I ever do that's definitely on my list to pay. In the meantime though there are just so many dpad games...
@PetraOleum yeah it's not like you're gonna get bored lol
@ifixcoinops
How does it compare to Galaga Arrangement?
@chocobo13 IDK, haven't played that one
