I'm in the market for #canada tax software that doesn't require Windows. #Linux would be great. Rather opposed to online tax software.

Looking for both T1 and T2 solutions.

Would consider running a package intended for Windows under Wine if that's the only option.

I expect to pay for it, esp for T2 software.

Tax prep software is one of a few use cases that keeps my Windows VM around. The others are firmware updaters for keyboards.

@johnefrancis

I would love to have a Linux-native Canadian tax app, but they don't exist to the best of my knowledge. I've been using Windows versions of various tax packages (BisonTax, TurboTax, now Ufile) in a virtual machine I keep for just that purpose.

The Windows versions of Ufile don't have a particularly fancy UI; they might run okay under Wine, but I've not tried. It's also possible it would refuse to run on anything but a real Windows installation because of the CRA certification or something.

@cazabon @johnefrancis I would suggest myTaxExpress https://mytaxexpress.com/. The software is released as an appimage for Linux and it works very well. I wrote an article on how to install and run it, https://kb.adamsdesk.com/application/mytaxexpress/.

Interesting! I wasn't aware of this one, I'll have to check it out and read your article.

Thanks!

@cazabon @johnefrancis I too was searching for a solution several years ago. I hope it works for you. You're welcome.

@adamsdesk @cazabon @johnefrancis Oh awesome!

I may have even asked this question a year ago, but totally forgot. Thanks for the reminder.

@calvin You're welcome.

@adamsdesk @cazabon that's awesome. I did notice their Mac version listed on the CRA tax software list, but they don't have a Linux version listed.

I will be giving it a test soon!

@johnefrancis Yeah I noticed that too. I hope its the solution you've been looking for. @cazabon
@adamsdesk @cazabon Iwas able to launch the AppImage, a great sign. And it's considerably cheaper than my existing T2 package, so I will be going deeper...
@johnefrancis That's great. I've used the software for several years now successfully. @cazabon
@adamsdesk @cazabon thanks for pointing it out to me. This was a fairly obscure question and I'm very impressed it managed to reach someone with an answer, just using a few tags on a larval social media ecosystem.
@johnefrancis Honestly I was just browsing and stumbled upon you're post. This has me thinking that I should write a post reviewing the software capabilities. @cazabon

@adamsdesk @johnefrancis

If you write it, ~~they will come~~ I would read it!

@cazabon Well thank you.
