The rollback of major DEI programs in FAANG companies should be a reminder that your company is not your friend and you need a union to protect your rights.
@Ashedryden Serious question: why are there no unions (that i’m aware of) for Software Developers or other folks in Tech/IT?
#developer #tech #it #Union #SoftwareDevelopers #TechUnions #ITWorkers

@codedbydan generally speaking, for two reasons
1) tech workers have deeply bought into the meritocracy and collective bargaining feels counter to it
2) it feels super hypocritical to claim you are getting exploited when your comp is well into 6 figures

Pretty easy to manipulate people into feeling masters of their own destiny and more like they deserve those comp numbers, if they avoid a union. Ignore those folks over there that are actually exploited, the meritocracy says they deserve it

Again, the above is generally speaking

@Ashedryden

@draNgNon That's a really good explanation! Thanks for breaking it down.
@draNgNon @codedbydan @Ashedryden I was thinking about this yesterday, and you clarified it. Both meritocracy and the seeming hypocrisy of having all these comforts + high paying job while being exploited. Are there any tech unions or efforts to unionize that you suggest we follow? it's so rare for my classmates to talk negatively about software engineering or tech jobs in general. it's seen as a prestigious thing siigh

@nadia hm, I am no expert here; I work at Google, and US unionization there isn't terribly effective (I personally believe, becuase of the two reasons I cited above). where are you... what nation, I don't need anything more specific?

@codedbydan @Ashedryden

@draNgNon i'm in the US as well
@codedbydan @Ashedryden because a lot of software engineers are the kind of people you see commenting on HN, and if you've seen those people talk about unions, like damn, they have some kind of god complex, "oh hey, a union would end up making me paid as much as my less productive co-workers, I'm actually a 10x engineer, and I deserve every bajillion of the dollars that are paid to me and yeah unions are for losers"
