Todayʻs word is "poelele" meaning an artificial satellite in space. She gives the derivation as "flying round object" (so the "round" meaning of "poe") but elsewhere I have heard "flying buoy" (where "buoy" is another meaning of "poe", presumably from the English?). I like "flying buoy" better since it captures the function - 1/2

Hawaiian Word of the Day: January 8th

Our Hawaiian word of the day is poelele, a word that ancient Hawaiians had no need for. Poelele means satellite, it's a flying round object.

I was a little worried that I couldnʻt remember where I learned "flying buoy" for "poelele" and that maybe I had made it up??? He haumāna wale nō au! (Iʻm just a student!!!) but Māmaka Kaiao agrees:
