Meta seems cooked, but I’m glad we have open and federated alternatives!

@dansup

@signalapp is also a good choice for secure family group chats.

@eloquence @dansup @signalapp

@SignalMessenger is the best messaging and communication app and service #opensource #end2endEncrypted

@nicholasr @eloquence @dansup @signalapp but it's not federated, which is what OP is presenting

@nicholasr @eloquence @dansup @signalapp I think it's depends on your usage profile. Signal is great when you need encryption, privacy, and security. For my everyday online social media, I don't require that, and I prioritize getting quality content from all the sources I want to see and interact with, and I want it to be easy.

If I'm sharing caturday pictures, I'll be here. If I'm planning the revolution, I'll be on Signal.

@rora_borealis @eloquence @dansup @signalapp

#SignalMessenger i an #OpenSource, #Encrypted messaging service for instant messaging, #Voice calls, and #Video calls.

#Mastodon and other #Fediverse apps are #Federated #SocialMedia apps.

The the needs are almost diametrically opposed. Social media apps are about sharing, in a open way. Not only is Signal Messenger #EndToEnd #Encrypted
, the non profit foundation behind Signal Messenger is highly focus is on privacy and security

@rora_borealis @eloquence @dansup @signalapp

Also you don't need to be planning a revolution as a need to use Signal Messenger. It is critical for everyone to use Signal Messenger. From the US Federal Government to #China to tech and corporate entities as threat actors who want to steal or use your private date to manipulate you.

@rora_borealis @eloquence @dansup @signalapp

The crazy thing is due to the #Chinese attack on our mobile data networks, the US government is now recommending all US citizens use #SignalMessenger to protect their own privacy. Quite ironic

@dansup Do you know of any good tutorial videos that explain what the Fediverse and Mastodon are?

I’m starting to advocate for the Fediverse among my friends and would love a resource to share with them

What is the Fediverse?

PeerTube

@obc @dansup nice, simple and visualized

Thank you

The Fediverse - Explained by Common Craft

PeerTube

@obc @dansup this one even better

Thank you second time :)

@ujeenator @dansup I'm pushing this platform as much as I can. Thank you for sharing!

@obc @dansup

Given all the issues surrounding centralized social networks and the incredible value the fediverse brings, I feel motivated to actively support and promote it as well.

@dansup you should do a upgraded hubzilla UI, so it looks modern like pixelfed
@everlastingos @dansup i don’t think hubzilla provides a complete API that would allow creating such a *modern* UI. and hubzilla doesn’t even aim to provide facebook-like experience and feature set
@everlastingos @dansup it's not one of his many great projects, but perhaps you knew that and you were suggesting he contribute?πŸ™‚
@josef @dansup yes i do suggesting he contribute or just make a other UI on top of pixelfed that looks like facebook :)
In my opinion Friendica is a closer alternative to Facebook (Or smithereen)
@dansup (as Facebook alternative, also remember to mention Frendica and streams)
@dansup
Oh, Loops is kinda done and usable? Or still in alpha?
@dansup please don't promote Signal here. It's centralized and not really open source. Matrix is what you are looking for.
@cos @dansup Unable to decrypt: The sender's device has not sent us the keys for this message.
@cos @dansup kill yourself matrix is dogshit abomination protocol i never want to speak to anyone who uses it shutupshutupshutupshutup

@cos @dansup

How is #SignalMessenger not open source?

@nicholasr @dansup development is done in internal repositories, not in public. Source is released sometimes with delay. Also licensing doesn't allow anyone else to publish Signal clients except them - note how there isn't Signal on F-Droid or debian.

Also the protocol itself is proprietary, I'd prefer open standards such as ActivityPub, Matrix or XMPP.

@dansup the issue is, and always will be adoption of these platforms. I’m still trying to convince people to use signal over WhatsApp - and I have like 5 contacts using it πŸ˜πŸ˜‚
@paulsanders @dansup True. I've done a bit better than you at getting people onto Signal, but still

@paulsanders The network effect is real. People generally don't switch until they *really* can't or don't want to use it anymore. I don't think this moment calls for it tbh.

@dansup

@dansup I wouldn't call Matrix a replacement for WhatsApp. Only Signal is at this moment (for the masses - don't scream XMPP-fanboys!) . Matrix is a replacement for (the none gaming usage of) Discord and Slack.

I forgot the Matrix-fan-boys (not the film). Tech-bros incoming. πŸ›‘οΈ

Seriously. If I can get my 82 year old parents successfully use @signalapp (incl. account creating / onboarding) successfully for a long time now, it's a WhatsApp alternative. Period. People are maybe going to install one extra IM-app (if they keep WhatsApp) on their phone. If they see that only 1 or 2 people are using an IM-app, they won't use it and because Signal already has a critical number of users, it's the only one people keep. The race for thΓ© #WhatsApp alternative is between #Signal and #Telegram. So let's hope it will be Signal. πŸ™

All other gadgets have their own use-case, but not for my old parents, the sport instructor, your new girlfriend or your irritating little nephew.

But I really hope Signal is going into the decentralization game ASAP.

Muting this thread now.

@joenepraat @signalapp my 90 year old granny and my parents all use https://quicksy.im (xmpp)
Quicksy

A spin-off of the popular Jabber/XMPP client Conversations with automatic contact discovery. Sign up with your phone number and Quicksy will automaticallyβ€”based on the phone numbers in your address bookβ€”suggest possible contacts to you.

@dansup I dunno about equating Instagram with Pixelfed. There's lots of ordinary folks on Instagram, everything from disability rights advocates to a woman who performs classical works on the piano with a rooster on her head. But Pixelfed seemed to be exclusively for serious photography; I found it very intimidating.

@dansup

Ack! I saw a post earlier that was someone looking for just this information. I have the link to your post saved in hopes I see the request again.

Whatsapp -> https://matrix.org
Matrix.org

Matrix, the open protocol for secure decentralised communications

I'd move from #Friendica to #Hubzilla if the latter included the support for #Bluesky and #RSS of the former. Otherwise both projects are very robust! Been using them one way or another since at least a decade ago!
@dansup may I ask what specifically prompted this #deletemeta post? I wholeheartedly agree (but the network effects are strong), but wondering what I've missed. Thanks!
Grow Your Own Services 🌱 (@[email protected])

Today Zuckerberg and Meta/Facebook removed most of the restrictions on hatred and bigotry that previously existed. Admins that haven't yet done so may want to defederate threads.net as it is only going to get more toxic and hateful from now on. This is how to defederate servers on Mastodon: ➑️ https://fedi.tips/how-to-defederate-fediblock-a-server-on-mastodon Meta has also pledged to work with Trump for "free speech", and as part of this is moving its entire content moderation department to Texas. #FediAdmin #MastoAdmin #FediBlock

@josef @dansup Zuck announced no more fact checking, in favor of community, uh, something; basically all the bigotry and lies are about to get so much worse.
@dansup OneDrive/Teams/Sharepoint -> #Nextcloud
@matv1 @dansup yep, but it was a #deletemeta post not a generic #deletetechgiants one πŸ™‚
@josef @dansup oh right, well I did that years ago 😎
@matv1 @dansup good for you! I #selfhost most stuff and run @e_mydata @murena on my phone but the tech giants still have their teeth in me!
@dansup Matrix unfortunately to complicated for family and friends. Not a new Whatsapp.
@dansup I just signed up at pixelfed. Looks great.

@dansup A better way for #Facebook #alternatief is nlsocoaal.nl
Has web interface and app

Has all the potential
#MorpurgoMedia

@dansup The one thing keeping on facebook is local community groups. My profile is basically a burner account with not much personal info, but I love my local Buy Nothing group.
@KnittingMittens @dansup and Friendica offers almost no solution for that. It just links to external sites.
@KnittingMittens @dansup Yes, as much as I like being on Mastodon, I've found some things, like local groups, health support groups and even people to chat to who are watching the same TV programmes, impossible to find/replicate on the Fediverse.
@dansup so these services have robust moderation and fact checking? Who fact checks the fact checkers to ensure they’re being truthful and unbiased?
@dansup How does one rearrange post order in a collection?
@dansup id add Lemmy for groups/forum functionality. Its a massive part of why people still use Facebook.
